Estudios bizantinos: Revista de la Sociedad Española de Bizantinística
ISSN: 2014-9999
http://www.publicacions.ub.edu/revistes/estudiosBizantinos01/images/cabecera.png
The journal Estudios bizantinos aims to be a communication tool at the service of the community formed by scholars of the Byzantine world. To this end, the contents published are offered to readers in Open Access, under a Creative Commons license. Its creation by the Sociedad Española de Bizantinística (Spanish Society of Byzantine Studies) is seen as a means to achieve the overall objective of promoting Byzantine Studies in Spanish-speaking countries.Estudios bizantinos is an international journal, published annually, open to all those who wish to publicize their research on any aspect of Byzantine civilization. Although the editors of the journal are open to receive content in all languages, we feel that publication in languages which are less common in scientific circles is detrimental to the assessments and reviews of the research presented in the journal; we therefore encourage authors to submit their work in English, French or Spanish.
Originals sent to the journal’s editorial office should deal with one or more of the following areas:

  • Byzantine Civilization: archaeology, art, law, philology, philosophy, history, linguistics, palaeography, theology, etc.
  • The impact of Byzantium and its relationship with neighbouring peoples.
  • Late Antiquity in both the Western and the Eastern Mediterranean and, in particular, Byzantium’s contacts with the Iberian Peninsula and Western Christianity.
  • Relationships with the Slavic, Latin and Islamic cultures.
The journal may devote part of each annual volume to a single theme, with its own introduction and accompanying materials.
Works presented for publication will be submitted to an evaluation process which will decide as quickly as possible whether to accept or reject it  [see Publication policy].
We encourage readers of Estudios bizantinos to subscribe to the journal in order to receive the latest news of publication. They can also learn about other news relating to Byzantium on the web of the Sociedad española de Bizantinística.

Association of Ancient Historians Newsletter
The Association of Ancient Historians was founded with two essential objectives. The first of these is to foster a regular forum for scholarly interaction among historians of the Ancient Mediterranean--especially among those who study the Greeks and Romans--and secondly, to do so in a manner that emphasizes collegiality and social interaction.

Since 1996 the Center for the Preservation of Ancient Religious Texts has undertaken digital humanities projects relating to Syriac studies, manuscript studies and the Dead Sea Scrolls. These projects provide access to primary resources for the study of ancient religious texts. Follow the links below for more information about the Center’s current projects. For brief descriptions of completed project go to the Completed Projects page. To follow the work of the Center see our Facebook page. To learn more about the CPART's Director and student Interns go here.

The following bibliography of essential out-of-copyright reference works was prepared by Dr. David G.K. Taylor (University Lecturer in Aramaic and Syriac, University of Oxford) for the BYU-CUA Syriac Studies Reference Library. However, only a portion of the bibliography was scanned and published for that collection. This bibliography now links to all of the volumes scanned in CUA's Semitics/ICOR library, together with other volumes subsequently scanned in other projects. Contents

KeiBi online: Die Keilschrift-Bibliographie im Netz
http://vergil.uni-tuebingen.de/keibi/assets/img/keibi.jpg

The International Keilschriftbibliographie (KeiBi) was first published by
the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome in the journal Orientalia in 1940
(Orientalia N.S. 9). It became an essential tool for the study, research,
and teaching of Ancient Near Eastern Studies. The search for entries,
though, proves quite cumbersome – a weakness that all bibliographies issued
over a substantial period of time share. To enable better access we hereby
present the KeiBi online Database, where all issues already published can be
searched simultaneously.

The KeiBi online is made possible with the support of the German Research
Foundation (DFG) within the project „Propylaeum“ – Virtual Library Classical
Studies. It was developed as part of the Propylaeum module Ancient Near
Eastern Studies at the University Library Tübingen, with the support of the
Institute of Ancient Near Eastern Studies (IANES), University of Tübingen.

Prof. Dr. Hans Neumann, in cooperation with the Institut für
Altorientalische Philologie und Vorderasiatische Altertumskunde, University
of Münster, provided the KeiBi entries from volume 57 (Orientalia N.S. 69,
1999) onwards. Earlier issues were scanned and digitally processed.

The KeiBi online is still under construction. Volumes are added in reverse
beginning with volume 67 (Orientalia N.S. 79, 2009). Due to copyright the
most recent two volumes are not included. After the issue of a new volume
the next to last issue will be added.

Emanating from southern Iran's Persis (Fars) region in the third century AD, the Sasanian domain eventually encompassed not only modern day Iran and Iraq, but also the greater parts of Central Asia and the Near East, including at times the regions corresponding to present-day Israel, Turkey, and Egypt. This geographically diverse empire brought together a striking array of ethnicities and religious practices. Arameans, Arabs, Armenians, Persians, Romans, Goths as well as a host of other peoples all lived under the Sasanian rule.

CORPUS CORPORUM: repositorium operum Latinorum apud universitatem Turicensem
http://www.mlat.uzh.ch/MLS/pictures/CC.png

The site mlat.uzh.ch is a Latin text (meta-)repository and tool under way of development. Users should take into account that many functions do not yet work satisfactorily. This Corpus Córporum is being developed at the University of Zurich under the direction of Ph. Roelli, Institute of Medieval Latin Studies. The project uses exclusively free and open software and is non-commercial. Our main goals are:

- To provide a platform into which standardised (TEI) xml-files of Latin texts can be loaded (if you would like to share your texts, please contact us) and downloaded (unless copyrights restrict this).
- To present these texts in a way that they may be read online. Latin words in the text can be resolved to their grammatical form by clicking them (powered by Perseus and TreeTagger). The entries in the following dictionaries are then displayed: Georges (Latin-German), Lewis and Short (Latin-English) and DuCange (mediaeval Latin).
- To make these texts searchable in complex manners (including by lemma). Searches, wordlists and concordances can be generated for the current level at the bottom left of the page (we use the open-source software Sphinx).
- To be able to use the platform to publish Latin texts online (cf. the Richard Rufus Project's corpus).
- Texts may be downloaded as TEI xml or txt-files for non-commercial use (soon also as pdf).

The texts are divided into corpora on a specific topic that can be searched and studied separately: the first such corpus consists of ten translations of Aristotle's Physica into Latin. They were used to study how technical Greek language could be translated into Latin. Word frequency lists are also on the server. This study was published in two papers.

Thanks to a grant we were able to intensify work on this project in 2013. The following steps are under way between 2013 and 2015: (i) Adaptation and installation of TreeTagger in order to automatically tag our texts syntactically and to lemmatise them. We use Gabriele Brandolini's data-set for Latin; it is largely based on St. Thomas Aquinas (will be soon online). (ii) Formatting and loading large amounts of texts in order to be able to test for our software. (iii) Time-delimited searches and chronological search result lists. (iv) Further we are in contact with those Mediaeval Latin Dictionaries present in COST action IS1005. They are currently working on a wiki-powered cross search tool which would be linked to this site in the future.

The data we transcribed ourselves is published under Creative Commons Share-Alikeand may thus be reused freely (but non-commercially) as long as the source is indicated. Most of the text present here, however, stem from various online sources. As far as we could determine they are either in the public domain or their use was granted us by their owners. If you believe to have rights on a text erroneously published here, please contact us and we will delete it or restrict its access. A short presentation of this project's goals and plans can be downloaded here as a pdf containing a demonstration video (11MB).

Administrator of this server is Dr. Philipp Roelli, the application code is being developed by Max Bänziger. To contact us write to turicense@gmail.com. Last updated Jan. 2014.

New Public Map Tiles and Antiquity À-la-carte 3.0 Beta
February 3, 2014 in Antiquity À-la-carte, API, Benthos, E-resource, Interest, News, Pleiades Project, Site Information
The AWMC is proud to announce the release of a series of geographically accurate, publicly accessible map tiles (http://awmc.unc.edu/wordpress/tiles/ ), suitable for use in nearly any web mapping application or GIS software suite. These tiles are hosted on Mapbox servers courtesy of ISAW, and are created by Ryan Horne from AWMC data produced by Richard TalbertJeffrey Becker, Ryan Horne, Ross Twele, Audrey JoRay Belanger, Steve Burges, Luke Hagemann, Ashley Lee, and others.

Offering the first (and at the time of this writing, only) geographically accurate base map of the ancient world, the AWMC tiles conform to the broad periodization presented in the Barrington Atlas, with different selectable water levels for the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Late Antique Periods. In addition, we also model inland water, rivers, and other geographical features as they appeared in antiquity. The base tiles are culturally agnostic, allowing them to be used to represent the physical environment of nearly any ancient society in the Mediterranean world. In addition to the base map and geographical tiles we also present the Roman road network, generally following the Barrington Atlas with additional work by the AWMC. Like all of our other electronic offerings, our new tiles are released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC 3.0) license and remain absolutely free for personal, academic, and non-commercial use.

Principia:Revista do Departamento de Letras Clássicas e Orientais do Instituto de Letras da UERJ
ISSN: 1415-6881
