Euripides Scholia
Donald J. Mastronarde

The goals of this project are quite traditional in a philological sense, but also experimental and forward-looking in terms of format.
On the traditional side, the goal is to gain a better understanding of the scholia surviving in medieval manuscripts of Euripides and make the information widely available to scholars and students. Some of the specific issues or goals are the following:
  • Improve the accuracy and completeness of the information about the most important manuscripts used in the standard edition of the old scholia by Eduard Schwartz (1887-1891). From my sample to date covering Orestes 1-500, it is evident that Schwartz’s collations of M, B, and V were quite accurate, but there are some corrections to be made; his collation of C was less accurate and less complete. He also provided insufficient information about the lemmata and he omitted some glosses (written by the same hands as the scholia blocks). The scholia in H (the Jerusalem palimpsest) were not known to him (the existence of H had been reported, but because of the nature and condition of the manuscript nothing was known of the scholia readings), and he did not report those in O, which he wrongly considered to be of the 15th century, whereas currently scholars date this manuscript to ca. 1175.
  • Clarify the extent, nature, and possible stemmatic relationships of the scholia in some of the so-called recentiores (manuscripts generally dating from the very late 13th century and the 14th century and usually confined to the plays of the Euripidean triad: Hecuba, Orestes, Phoenissae). The editions of Matthiae and Dindorf reported some of these, while Schwartz limits himself to rare reports, citing only readings that he adopts from one of the recentiores when the older manuscripts he cites all present a corruption or omit the relevant word(s). The relationship of the scholia in these manuscripts to the those in the older manuscripts needs to be fully explored. Many recentiores also carry frequent glosses, and these cannot be accurately judged unless the glosses in the older manuscripts are also collected completely. The glosses in various recentiores also need to be known to provide context for judging the younger scholia (scholia recentiora) by named scholars, a very high proportion of which are glosses.
  • Provide a reliable and complete edition of the scholia attributable to Manuel Moschopulus and Thomas Magister (both of whom were probably commenting on the triad plays of Euripides roughly during the period 1290-1305). Moschopulean scholia are in general known from reports of Gr in Dindorf’s edition, but Dindorf’s reporting of Gr is not complete and Gr is in any case not the most reliable witness of this set of scholia. Thoman scholia are partially known from reports of Gu in Dindorf’s edition, but Dindorf’s reporting is even less complete for this set, and Gu’s versions offer more variations and expansions than other witnesses of the Thoman set.
  • Provide full reporting of Triclinius’ work on the triad in T together with information about his much sparser metrical annotation in L. Triclinius worked on this manuscript over a number of years in roughly the period 1300-1325. The Triclinian scholia on the triad have been published from T by De Faveri, but a few corrections can be provided and a few omissions repaired (her edition is also hard to obtain). For instance, only by comparison with an accurate collection of Moschopulean and Thoman scholia can one recognize a few glosses and notes that are unique to T (or to T and one or two other intriguing witnesses). In addition, information about the colon-layout that Triclinius’ metrical scholia describe can be provided to the user in a more convenient fashion. The Triclinian notations in L on other plays were partially reported in Matthiae’s edition, and are also treated by Zuntz.
  • Incorporate into the corpus the few traces of marginal annotation that have been found in papyri and the scholia of P. Würzb. 1.
  • Clarify the nature and extent of scholia labeled as being by Maximus Planudes or conjectured by some scholars to reflect his work.
  • Include, eventually, non-Triclinian metrical scholia.
Work is under way to bring a very full set of scholia on Orestes 1-500 online in 2018. In the meantime:
  • The open-access book Preliminary Studies on the Scholia to Euripides in now available. For information and links for page-view reading or for ordering print-on-demand copies, see the Catalogue page of California Classical Studies.
  • In order to keep track of the sigla used for Euripidean manuscripts, maintaining as many as possible of those used from Turyn 1957 to the present, a spreadsheet has been compiled containing 136 sigla. On this site you can now see a table displayed or download the Excel file itself: EurSiglaTable.html.
  • An updated Manuscripts page is present now and being actively revised with more complete information, with additional fields added, such as the diktyon number used in the database at Pinakes.

AIO Papers (Attic Inscriptions Online)
https://www.atticinscriptions.com/live/static/img/AIO_logo_150.png
As this is the inaugural publication of AIO Papers, readers may welcome a word of explanation as to the purpose of the series. The primary objective of Attic Inscriptions Online is to make available English translations of Attic inscriptions, based on the most accurate and up-to-date Greek texts. The authoritative publications of the Greek texts are Inscriptiones Graecae vol. I (before 403 BC) and vol. II (403 BC - AD 267), new editions of which appear at infrequent intervals. When an inscription is included in a recently published volume of IG, such as the third edition of IG II (IG II3), the first fascicules of which appeared in 2012, identifying “the most accurate and up-to-date” Greek text can be quite straightforward. In other cases, however, there can more of an issue. It can often be addressed by including one or more references to the review of epigraphical scholarship which is published every year in the Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum (SEG). However, a simple reference to IG, SEG, or occasionally to another publication, is not always sufficient. SEG, for example, records textual proposals with a degree of indiscrimination which may mislead the inexperienced user. In the process of reviewing the textual literature while preparing a translation for AIO translators may see potential for textual improvements which require explanation and justification. The first purpose of AIO Papers, therefore, is to supply a forum in which the texts underlying the translations published in AIO may be clarified.

Second, it is part of AIO’s purpose to communicate Attic inscriptions to students and researchers who may lack the background knowledge, of the languages, culture and institutions of the Greek world in general, and of Athens and Attica in particular, that is needed to understand a translated inscription in its raw state. AIO Papers will publish essays intended to equip the user of AIO with such background knowledge. AIO Papers no. 4, to appear later in 2014, will be the first of this type: a companion to the translations of the inscribed Athenian laws and decrees of 352/1-322/1 BC, texts of which were published in IG II3 1, fascicule 2.

AIO Papers will also publish other papers consistent with the objectives of AIO.
This includes translations of important articles written by scholars in languages other than English but which, in the editor’s opinion, deserve a wider circulation among an Anglophone readership. AIO Papers no. 2 and 3, translations of two papers originally published in Italian by Enrica Culasso Gastaldi, fall into this category.
[From the Preface to AIO Papers 1]

AIO Papers 8

S. D. Lambert - Two Inscribed Documents of the Athenian Empire: The Chalkis Decree and the Tribute Reassessment Decree

This paper discusses two important inscriptions for the history of the Athenian Empire, the Chalkis decree of 446/5 (or 424/3?) BC (IG I3 40) and the tribute reassessment decree (“Thoudippos’ decree”) of 425/4 BC (IG I3 71). Based on English translations of the most up-to-date and authoritative Greek texts, the paper sets out to explain the inscriptions in historical context, without assuming prior knowledge of ancient Greek or of the history of Athens and the Athenian Empire. To help the reader new to the study of Athenian inscriptions, the Paper includes an introduction to inscribed Athenian decrees of the fifth century BC. This paper will be useful for researchers, teachers and learners of Greek History at University level, but is also designed to help 6th-form teachers and students in the UK with the study of these two inscriptions, which are set as source material for the “Relations between Greek states and between Greek and non-Greek states, 492-404 BC” period study under the OCR specification for A-level Ancient History (H407, for first assessment in 2019; LACTOR4 1.78 and 138). Note: minor corrections were incorporated on 28 June 2017. Hard copies are available through Andromeda Books.

AIO Papers 7

S. D. Lambert with a contribution by J. D. Morgan - The Last Erechtheion Building Accounts

This paper presents up-to-date texts, informed by relevant work published since 2000, of the two extant sets of fragments of the building accounts of the Erechtheion in Ionic script as a basis for translations of these accounts published simultaneously on AIO. It reviews the date of these accounts, and presents a fresh argument by John Morgan to the effect that, if certain assumptions are made, no. 2 (IG I3 477) is datable to 405/4 BC. That would make it probably the latest extant account. Morgan also finds in this fragment a supporting argument for the position initially aired in AIO Papers 5, p. 3, that the Council's year and the archon's year were not made systematically coterminous in 407 BC, as had previously been thought, but continued to be out of step, probably until ca. 403 BC.

AIO Papers 6

S. D. Lambert - The Inscribed Version of the Decree Honouring Lykourgos of Boutadai (IG II2 457 and 3207)

This paper reviews the relationship between IG II2 457, the upper part of an Athenian decree of 307/6 BC honouring posthumously the orator Lykourgos of Boutadai, and IG II2 3207, the lower part of a stele inscribed with crowns commemorating decrees honouring Lykourgos passed in his lifetime. It finds that 3207 either belonged to the same stele as 457, as the great epigraphist Adolf Wilhlem proposed, or to a separate, but associated stele. In section 2 it investigates the decrees commemorated on 3207, locating them in the context of Lykourgos’ career, his rivalry with Demades and his relations with other politicians of the period.

AIO Papers 5

S. D. Lambert - Accounts of Payments from the Treasury of Athena in 410-407? BC (IG I3 375 and 377)

This paper treats the accounts of payments from the treasury of Athena in 410-407? BC which are inscribed on the front and back of the so-called Choiseul marble, in the Louvre in Paris (IG I3 375 and 377). It presents a fresh text of the difficult reverse face of the inscription (377), which prints only those readings on which the three rival texts currently in circulation are in agreement, and discusses the date. It is designed to support the translations of IG I3 375 and 377 published on AIO and includes an annotated table of the payments listed in these accounts.

AIO Papers 4

S. D. Lambert - Inscribed Athenian Decrees of 229/8-198/7 BC (IG II3 1, 1135-1255)

After exploring features of the history and methodology of Attic epigraphy, this paper surveys the corpus of 121 Athenian decrees of 229/8-198/7 BC recently published as IG II3 1, 1135-1255 (sections I-II of IG II3 1 fascicule 5). It reviews the decrees by category, discussing some historical aspects and proposing some improvements to the texts. It is designed to be read with the translations of these inscriptions published on AIO.

AIO Papers 1

S. D. Lambert - Notes on Inscriptions of the Marathonian Tetrapolis

This paper accompanies the publication on AIO of the inscriptions of the Marathonian Tetrapolis and is designed primarily to clarify the texts on which the translations are based. It reviews scholarship on the Tetrapolis’ sacrificial calendar (iv BC), published since my new edition, ZPE 130 (2000), 43-70, and makes some fresh observations. It also reviews the other inscriptions attributable to the Tetrapolis, IG I3 255, IG II2 2933, IG II2 1243, and an unpublished inscription.

The Latin Josephus Project
Flavius Josephus (c. 37–100 CE) was a historian who wrote the Antiquities, a history of the Jews up to Roman times, and the Jewish War, describing the Jewish rebellion against the Romans in 66–73 CE, as well as the Against Apion.

While Josephus originally wrote these works in Greek, they were extremely popular and influential during late antiquity and the Middle Ages in Latin translations (see here for more details). James J. O'Donnell suggested that the Antiquities was 'the single most often copied historical work of the Middle Ages'.

This Project

This site will offer a transcription of the Latin versions of Flavius Josephus' two largest works, the Jewish War and the Antiquities. At UBC, in 2013, we began with the latter, based on a Carolingian era (s. IXmed) copy: Bamberg Msc.Class.78 (Blatt, no. 113).  The Latin has been made to align with the Greek text (from Niese), which is then aligned with the English translation produced by Whiston in 1737.

In 2014–15, the project transcribed much of Book 1 of the Bellum Judaicum (i.e. Jewish War) from the 1524 Frobenius edition. This was done with the help of William Glaeser.  This again has been paired with the Niese Greek text and the Whiston translation. (This text has now been labelled as the "Froben" for Book 1).

In 2016-17, at UQAM, at great deal of progress was made.  Books 9 to 12 of the Antiquities were transcribed by Maxime Laprade and Jonathan di Gregorio, all of which are available in either polished or raw versions at the moment.  Also, in June 2017, Richard Pollard produced an electronic text of the complete Latin Bellum Judaicum, using the edition of Edward Cardwell from 1837, which is based on the Galenius edition of 1534.  This means that the text occasionally contains hyper-corrections based on the Greek text, but on the whole it is a decent approximation of the Latin text found in the medieval manuscript tradition.

This project will supersede the editions of both Blatt and the Frobenius (see below): it will eventually provide a complete, searchable text of the Latin versions of Josephus' two largest works (Blatt is incomplete).  It is based on an early manuscript only for the Antiquities, but both works have now been carefully organised according to the modern editorial divisions in the text (the latter two both lacking in Frobenius). As of Oct 27th 2017, the site provides Antiquities I-XII, as well as the complete Latin Jewish War, far exceeding the coverage of Blatt (Ant. I-V).

Sharing Ancient Wisdoms
Welcome to the website of the Sharing Ancient Wisdoms project, and the SAWS Dynamic Library of Wisdom Literatures.

This project was funded by Humanities in the European Research Area, as part of their first Joint Research Programme. We are very grateful to them, and to our home institutions: King’s College London, The Newman Institute Uppsala, and the University of Vienna.
...The focus of the SAWS project is on collections of ideas and opinions – ranging from pithy sayings to short passages from longer philosophical texts - which make up the ancient genre of Wisdom Literature.  Such collections are found in all the cultures of the Middle East and Europe; but they have tended to be treated by scholars as nothing more than quarries for the earlier materials which they excerpted. They are also not easy to publish in book form, since each collection is a composition with its own identity. But they are key components in understanding the societies where they circulated, and the formation and transmission of ideas, both within those societies and between them, since many have been chosen for translation. Thus the collection of sayings published by Caxton, which circulated in several western European languages, was based on the Spanish translation of an Arabic collection, itself drawing on ancient Greek traditions...

Vetus Latina Iohannes
Current edition 2.0 (April 2015)
This electronic edition of the Old Latin manuscripts of St John's Gospel is the initial stage of a full edition of the Old Latin materials for this Gospel in the series Vetus Latina. Die Reste der Altlateinischen Bibel nach Petrus Sabatier neu gesammelt und herausgegeben von der Erzabtei Beuron. The second stage consists of the collection and addition of patristic citations of the Gospel. This division was adopted for two reasons. The first is that the Gospels are unique in the Old Latin Bible, in that the main text-types are represented by extant manuscripts and not by citations. The transcriptions (and their apparatus) thus provide a framework to which the citations may then be added. The second reason is more pragmatic: the rules with regard to length and size of project of the Arts and Humanities Research Board, which funded both this work and its continuation, are such that the preparation of the full edition required to be split into two stages. The transcribing and editing of the manuscripts made a suitable first stage with its own worthwhile results.

The Verbum Project, as we called it, began in October 2002 and ran for three years within what was then the Centre for the Editing of Texts in Religion (now the Institute for Textual Scholarship and Electronic Editing) in the Department of Theology and Religion, University of Birmingham. Although free-standing, it built upon and shared ideas with the Principio Project, whose goals included a similar electronic edition of the Greek majuscule manuscripts of John. The project was directed by David Parker, while Jon Balserak and Philip Burton worked full-time on the project, the latter having responsibility for the practical decision-making. They produced the bulk of the transcriptions, although Hugh Houghton (who was working on a doctoral thesis more closely related to the patristic citations) and David Parker also made contributions. The production of the electronic edition and most of the proofreading have been undertaken by Hugh Houghton.

The Workspace for Collaborative Editing
The Workspace for Collaborative Editing was a collaborative Anglo-German project funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) between 2010 and 2013.

The goal was to create an online workspace to support the creation of a new edition of the Greek New Testament, the Novum Testamentum Graecum: Editio Critica Maior, led by the Institut für Neutestamentliche Textforschung in Münster (INTF) and the International Greek New Testament Project (IGNTP). This was conceived as a replacement to the Collate software created by Peter Robinson, used since 1995 by both projects but now obsolete. The specifications included the creation of a user-friendly online interface to create XML transcriptions of New Testament manuscripts and a collation tool using the CollateX algorithm developed by the INTEREDITION consortium, with the integration of tools for analysis of the manuscript tradition (the Münster Coherence-Based Genealogical Method) and addition of patristic and versional material to the apparatus.

Ancient Anatomies
https://ancientanatomies.files.wordpress.com/2017/10/cropped-tester-title-4.jpg
The body is many things: for the Hippocratic physician it is the sum of its parts, diseases and pains; for the Byzantine emperor it is unity and beauty, a proof of divine spirit; for the Athenian slave it is his tools of labour and means of survival; for the Roman prostitute it is a commodity with a value.

This project seeks to explore the body through objects, investigating the material world which represented, interacted with, forced and fashioned the body in the Ancient world.

The Writing of a Skillful Scribe: An Introduction to Hieratic Middle Egyptian Through the Text of the Shipwrecked Sailor
Poe, William Clay
URI: http://hdl.handle.net/10211.3/144864
Date: 2008

Abstract:

This book is an introduction to the principal form of the literary language of ancient Egypt. It is assumed that most people who use this text will be interested primarily in the Egyptian language as a component of the study of the culture of ancient Egypt and so will not be focused primarily upon the structure of Egyptian grammar. A major rationale for the organization of the book has thus been to introduce the student as quickly as possible to the reading of a connected narrative. In order to do this, the book has been narrowly focused; it uses a single rather simple, but nevertheless elegant, piece of literature to present examples of the principal structures of Middle Egyptian. The Story of the Shipwrecked Sailor has been selected as the single source for all of the examples in the text.

Alpheios Version 2.0.1 Alpha Release, February 2018
This release of the Alpheios Reading Tools for Chrome and Firefox is an alpha version, released with these goals in mind:
  • To provide a replacement for the original Firefox extensions.
  • To request user feedback on the design and functionality of the new version while we are still in early stages of development.
We encourage you to install and test the tools and offer feedback on what works, what doesn't and what you would like to see added or improved. Below are lists of the basic functionality which should be working now, known issues, and our dreams for future releases
See our instructions for Getting Started. Please send all feedback to support@alpheios.net.

Stable Features

General (all languages)
  • Alpheios functionality can be activated for any browser page and remains active until disabled.
  • Once activated, double-clicking on a word provides access to Alpheios resources.
Latin
  • Morphological analysis (Whitaker's Words)
  • Short definitions (Whitaker's Words)
  • Full definitions (Lewis and Short)
  • Linked and browsable grammar (Bennett)
  • Linked inflection tables
Greek
  • Morphological analysis (Morpheus analyzer)
  • Short definitions (available sources: LSJ, Middle Liddell, Autenreith, Dodson, Abbott)
  • Full definitions (available sources: LSJ, Middle Liddell, Autenreith, Dodson, Abbott)
  • Linked and browsable grammar (Smyth)
Classical Arabic
  • Morphological analysis (Buckwalter analyzer)
  • Short definitions (Lane and Salmone)
  • Full definitions (Lane and Salmone)

Experimental Features

Classical Persian
  • Definitions (Steingass)
  • Lemmatization (Hazm)

Known Issues and Requests for Feedback

  • Dynamic positioning of the popup near the word selection may not be optimal on all screen resolutions, particularly on words which are near the edge of the display. You can choose to set the position to fixed in the Options panel as a fallback.
  • We are actively seeking input on the best new user interface design for Alpheios. The current design is provisional and we expect we may change it significantly in coming releases. We need feedback from users to know what would work best.
  • The Latin inflection tables are missing irregular verbs and the ability to browse the tables independent from word lookups.
  • The Greek and Latin grammar displays need better navigation support and an updated design.
  • Automatic identification of the language of a page only works if the language has been explicitly identified in the markup. This should be improved upon.
  • The Persian functionality is only experimental. We need a new morphological analyzer in order to provide more complete results.

Features targeted for the Beta Release

  • Addressing known issues
  • Updated user interface design
  • Greek inflection tables
  • Inflection table browse functionality
  • Support for treebanks and aligned translations
  • User accounts and individual word lists
  • Release of the Alpheios component libraries for reuse

Longer term Roadmap

We have big dreams for Alpheios. We list just some of those here. Eventually we hope to support many additional features (such as commentary and annotation). We hope to provide full multilingual support for the interface and supporting resources, and also to add reading support for additional languages such as Hebrew, Syriac and Coptic. We want to offer more resources (lexicons, grammars, treebanks, translations, etc.) for the existing languages, and to allow users to supply and share their own resources for specific languages and texts. We want to link to the amazing array of already existing-community provided tools and services for these lanaguages, and to allow users the ability to customize the interface and resources for language learning according to their own needs and preferences. We will provide mobile applications and learning games to accompany the browser extensions. We will also explore the addition of audio and visual aids to accompany the texts.

First Version of the Scaife Digital Library Viewer goes live: building the future while remembering a friend
Gregory Crane
March 15, 2018
Leipzig, Germany
I am pleased to announce the first release of the Scaife Digital Library Viewer, a reading environment for source texts that follow the Canonical Text Services (CTS) data model. Our initial focus is on pre-modern sources, but the underlying approach applies to source texts of all periods. CTS provides a framework within which we can cite particular words in particular versions of particular texts — whether a version is a papyrus, manuscript, or a critical edition, whether versions of that text derive from a single lost original (as is the case for many ancient Greek and Latin texts) or the text itself appears in many versions, each of which has comparable authority (as is the case for many medieval sources). For those interested in more information, James Tauber, lead developer for this release, will present the Scaife Digital Library Viewer online on April 26 at 5 pm CEST as part of Sunoikisis Digital Classics. The presentation will be recorded and available, along with any other course materials, on the SunoikisisDC website after the class itself.
The Scaife Digital Library builds upon the Capitains suite of tools for creating and managing CTS-compliant textual data, developed by Bridget Almas, then one of the two leaders of the Perseids Project, and now at the Alpheios Project(http://alpheios.net/), and by Thibault Clérice, then a member of the Alexander von Humboldt Chair of Digital Humanities at Leipzig (and now at the École nationale des chartes). James Tauber, leader of Eldarion, a web development company as well as a long-time student of, and developer for, Biblical Greek, oversaw the development of the Scaife Digital Library as an open-source, customizable reading environment. In memory of Ross and what he stood for, the release is intended to empower the community to take charge and carry work forward. And, of course, the code is open and available on Github. Ross would not have had it any other way.
Ross Scaife (1960-2008) was a pioneer in reinventing the study of Greco-Roman culture to exploit the possibilities of a digital age. He was among the first — if not the first — to get tenure for a purely digital publication, Diotima: Materials for the Study of Women and Gender in the Ancient World, a project that he and Suzanne Bonefas launched in 1995 (the same year that David A. Smith, now an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Northeastern, established the first web presence for Perseus). Ross was a colleague and he was a friend, whom we mourn still and will always miss. We lost him on March 15, 2008 and it is with fond memory that we announce the first version of the Scaife Digital Library in his honor, on March 15, 2018, ten years later.
