Gouden hoorn: tijdschrift over Byzantium = Golden horn: journal of Byzantium
ISSN: 0929-7820
This is the archive of Gouden Hoorn (Golden Horn), Journal of Byzantium, which was published by Godiva Éditions on the initiative of the Council of Independent Byzantinists (Onafhankelijk Byzantinologen Overleg, OBO), that was founded on 29th November, 1991. The OBO aims at informing and bringing together lovers of Byzantium. The OBO hoped to reach its goal by publishing Gouden Hoorn twice a year.
Gouden Hoorn was published in a paper version as well as on this website. We no longer publish the paper version, and since 2002 we have not published any new issue (9:1 was the last issue).
Gouden Hoorn was edited by Annabelle Parker and André de Raaij. Jan Pieter Kunst was webmaster of the old Gouden Hoorn site that was hosted on Isidore-website.

ISAW Library Relaunches Ancient World Digital Library with Redesigned Portal
 by David Ratzan — May 07, 2015
The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW) and the Digital Library Technology Services (DLTS) in the New York University Division of Libraries have redesigned and relaunched the Ancient World Digital Library (AWDL) online portal. The new site offers significant improvements in the presentation, searching, and downloading of a growing collection of scholarship related to the ancient world.

ISAW Library Relauches Ancient World Digital Library with Redesigned Portal

The new AWDL with the AWDL Atlas, which allows user to browse visually by geography.
AWDL began as a collaboration between ISAW and DLTS in 2010. Although the AWDL website has been completely redesigned and expanded, AWDL’s mission remains to collect, curate, and sustain a digital collection of important research materials for the use of both the NYU and the general scholarly community, with a special focus on the cross-boundary and interdisciplinary research from the Mediterranean to Northern China pursued at ISAW. Besides its specific curatorial focus, AWDL also distinguishes itself from similar digital publishing projects by actively seeking to partner with scholars, institutions, and publishers in order to collect and serve digitized content that is either still in-print or under copyright, in addition to older material no longer under copyright.

The first product of the ISAW-DLTS collaboration was a stand-alone book viewer, serving titles in the Institute of Fine Arts (IFA) scanned by the Internet Archive (IA). The original AWDL site will remain active until these titles can be migrated to the new AWDL, which may be found at http://dlib.nyu.edu/ancientworld/. The redesigned AWDL offers an improved book viewer, as well as several new features and new content. One interesting new feature is the ability to browse AWDL geographically by using the AWDL Atlas, an open map built with Google Fusion Tables.
The new AWDL publishes 121 titles from our partner Brill, as well as the entire run of the Newsletter of the Center for Inner Asian Art, the predecessor of the Journal of Inner Asian Art and Archaeology. The American Society of Papyrologists has also partnered with ISAW, permitting AWDL to digitize and serve its monographic series, American Studies in Papyrology. These books will be published to AWDL over the next few months. Each digital object has a unique, persistent URL, maybe downloaded as a pdf, and has been cataloged with high-quality MARC records, so that it is discoverable from both Bobcat (NYU’s Library catalog) and WorldCat.

AWDL projects for the near-term include: building AWDL content; presenting ISAW Papers and ISAW’s digital publications from the NYU Press in the AWDL portal; and enhancing search capabilities within items.

For more information about AWDL, please write to David M. Ratzan, the ISAW Head Librarian at david.ratzan@nyu.edu. You may follow feature updates and new content publication to AWDL by following the ISAW Library Blog.

Aspects of History and Epic in Ancient Iran: From Gaumāta to Wahnām, by M. Rahim Shayegan

2611The Center for Hellenic Studies is pleased to announce the online publication of Aspects of History and Epic in Ancient Iran: From Gaumāta to Wahnām, by M. Rahim Shayegan, on the CHS website. The work is available for purchase in print via Harvard University Press.

Aspects of History and Epic in Ancient Iran focuses on the content of one of the most important inscriptions of the Ancient Near East: the Bisotun inscription of the Achaemenid king Darius I (6th century BCE), which in essence reports on a suspicious fratricide and subsequent coup d’état. Moreover, the study shows how the inscription’s narrative would decisively influence the Iranian epic, epigraphic, and historiographical traditions well into the Sasanian and early Islamic periods.

Intriguingly, our assessment of the impact of the Bisotun narrative on later literary traditions—in particular, the inscription of the Sasanian king Narseh at Paikuli (3rd–4th centuries CE)—necessarily relies on the reception of the oral rendition of the Bisotun story captured by Greek historians. As Rahim Shayegan argues, this oral tradition had an immeasurable impact upon the historiographical writings and epic compositions of later Iranian empires. It would have otherwise remained unknown to modern scholars, had it not been partially preserved and recorded by Hellanicus of Lesbos, Herodotus, Ctesias, and other Greek authors. The elucidation of Bisotun’s thematic composition therefore not only allows us to solve an ancient murder but also to reevaluate pre-Thucydidean Greek historiography as one of the most important repositories of Iranian epic themes.

Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae
http://aaew.bbaw.de/tla/bilder/elemente/collage1.gif
The Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae is a publication platform made available on the Internet by the Project Structure and Transformation in the Vocabulary of the Egyptian Language (former Ancient Egyptian Dictionary Project) at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Within the Thesaurus, a digital corpus of Egyptian (including Demotic) texts have been released to the public for computer-assisted search. Lemmatization and morpho-syntactic annotation of the text material allow for specific research from lexical, philological, linguistic, and historico-cultural points of view. All texts come with running translations to assist particularly non-specialists and scholars of neighbouring disciplines in their work.

The digital text corpus, forming the substance of this information system, is the result of years of ongoing cooperation among several projects, and will continue developing on this basis. Contributions have been made by the Project Structure and Transformation in the Vocabulary of the Egyptian Language (former Ancient Egyptian Dictionary Project) at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Saxonian Academy of Sciences ans Humanities in Leipzi. The now finished projects Demotic Text Database Project of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz (Wuerzburg branch), Book of the Dead Project of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts (Bonn) and "Digital Heka" has been involved from the very beginning. Since 2005, the Leuven Online Index of Ptolemaic and Roman Hieroglyphic Texts Project of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven has been involved. Since October 2012 texts of the Horus temple of the Edfu Project have been integrated. This cooperation was promoted by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences. The origin and concept of this Internet publication have largely been informed by this cooperation.

It is the purpose of the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae to make available, in the form of a virtual dictionary, a new and, within Egyptology novel, tool for lexicographic research into the Egyptian language. In this sense, the project closely follows both purpose and method of the comprehensive Wörterbuch der ägyptischen Sprache, which Adolf Erman inaugurated at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in 1897, making it a success story. As a token of admiration for this outstanding researcher, not least in the field of Egyptian lexicography, the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae was first released for general use on 31 October 2004 - the 150th birth anniversary of Adolf Erman.

A free tool, the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae requires registration.  Once registered the following functions are accessible:

Parthian Sources Online
Coin of Arsaces I of Parthia with inscriptions in Greek and Parthian
This website is a digital collection of texts from the Parthian empire, one of the biggest and longest-lasting empires of antiquity. Under the kings of the Arsacid dynasty (c. 247 BCE to 224 CE), the Parthians ruled a kingdom that stretched from central Asia in the east to the Euphrates river in the west. Their history is a crucial part of the legacy of ancient Iran, though in many respects it is still poorly understood.

Some of the texts here are in ancient Greek. Others are in Parthian, an Iranian language that outlasted the Arsacid empire and remained in use even after the overthrow of the dynasty. Coming soon are a few inscriptions in Latin composed by Parthians living in the territory of the Roman empire.

        Ubi Erat Lupa
Current amount of data: 24422 monuments and 40098 pictures / Last update: 2015/05/12, 22:08. UBI ERAT LUPA is a partner project of EAGLE (Europeana network of Ancient Greek and Latin Epigraphy) and is being maintained by 'CHC - Research Group for Archaeometry and Cultural Heritage Computing' and hosted by ITS at the University of Salzburg

The picture database www.ubi-erat-lupa.org (short form lupa) contains stone monuments (sculptures, reliefs, inscriptions, architectural pieces etc.).

lupa is a non-commercial project dedicated to informing scientists and interested laypersons. The project’s scope is from prehistoric stone monuments to around the time of Justinian (500 AD).
