CSA Newsletter: Published by The Center for the Study of Architecture
http://csanet.org/newsletter/NletTopHi.jpg
The CSA Newsletter is a Web-based publication produced three times per year — April (formerly called the Spring issue), September (formerly called the Fall issue), and January (formerly called the Winter issue). Prior to Volume X (1997-8) there were four issues per year: May, August, November, and February. An Internet distribution list is maintained for those who wish to be notified when CSA Newsletter issues are posted.

To subscribe, visit this web page. You will then receive announcements when newsletter articles are posted. There will be no messages to the list other then those concerning the CSA Newsletter.
The CSA Newsletter provides up-to-date information on the use of computers and digital technologies in the practice of archaeology and architectural history. Articles are intended to assist scholars in their attempts to use computers to generate digital information and in disseminating that digital information. CSA Newsletter articles should also be of interest to graduate students and others who want to know more about the development of information technology in these disciplines.

Unrequested submissions of articles or porposals for articles are welcome. Authors will be contacted regarding such submissions as quickly as possible. Submissions are preferred in the form of simple text in an email message but may also be in the form of documents attached to email messages (RTF format only, DOC format attachments will not be opened because of virus potential). Paper manuscripts will not be accepted or returned.

Newsletter articles written by the CSA staff are reviewed internally. Web site reviews written by authors not on the CSA staff are reviewed by the staff and, when required by the subject matter, outside experts. (CSA Director Harrison Eiteljorg, II, should be assumed to have authored articles that lack an explicit indication of the author; however, Susan C. Jones's input was often critical to such unsigned articles during her tenure at CSA from 1995 until 2009.)

There is no printed version of the CSA Newsletter as of the beginning of Volume 13 (Spring, 2000 issue). The Web versions of previous issues of the CSA Newsletter were compiled from printed issues. All articles from the printed issues from Feb., 1995 (Vol. 7 no. 4) through Feb. 1996 (Vol. 8 no. 4) were made available in Feb. of 1996 in HTML form, and all issues thereafter were posted on the Web as they were produced. Selected articles from the of Aug., 1994, issue (Vol. 7 no. 2) and the Nov., 1994, issue (Vol. 7 no. 3) were also made available in Feb. of 1996 in HTML form; two further articles from the Aug., 1990, issue (Vol. 3 no. 2) were put on the Web as HTML documents during Nov., 1999. In 2006 all issues that had not been fully posted in HTML format were scanned, and the resulting images have been placed on the web so that all articles of all issues are now available on the web. Readers should note, however, that the articles that have only been scanned for presentation cannot be searched for specified text.

Only those articles that are available on the Web in HTML form are listed in the topical indices. Each issue will have a posting date indicated.

Feel free to print any of the CSA Newsletter articles, bearing in mind that the articles are copyrighted.

Lascivia Roma Crowdsourcing Project
Find names of persons and places next to a member of the Latin semantic field of sexuality, annotate and lemmatize them, and tell us about their relationship with the member.

Available for annotation: 505 Sentences, 11 Words of the semantic field of Sexuality, 1012 Identified forms, 874 Potential Entities.
Understanding the sense of a word is a complicated task, especially in ancient languages, where the meaning of such words has been lost over the centuries and only a vague or ambiguous remaining sense is still known. Some of these words, such as lasciuus, a, um, appear to have had their meanings twisted in French translations (« enjoué, gai, pétulant, etc. ») as well as in English translations (petulant, sportive, playful in Lewis & Short on Perseus.tufts.edu). But its large use and context in Martial's Epigrammata drove us to think that its meaning has, after centuries of -perhaps- too much decency and propriety in translations, faded away. This is why we decided to create a way to collect more information about it and its companion in the lexical field of sexuality.

For this purpose, we designed Lasciva Roma. It will not only give us informations about lascivus, a, um but also on the semantic field of Sexuality and its context. It is by far the largest collection of data around this topic, driven by you.
Lasciva Roma is built on the Clotho project.
The Clotho project comprises two tools. The first one is based on python software, which enables the distant reading of the corpus and the export of its results. The other is a PHP platform which enables a team or a crowd to annotate and clean the results. Both are relatively easy to install and fully Open Source so new functionalities of wide application can be added.
  • Clotho Local (Python) Clotho Local will help you to find co-occurences, informations about context by using a nice command-line interface
  • Clotho Web (Php) Clotho Web will help you to process manually the results of Clotho Local

Tell Leilan Project

From 1979 to the present, the Yale University Tell Leilan Project has been excavating at Tell Leilan, Syria ( Figure 1 ) and conducting systematic archaeological surface surveys in the Tell Leilan region. Tell Leilan is one of the largest archaeological sites in Syria and was one of the most important cities in Northern Mesopotamia during the second and third millennia BC, when it was known as Šehna and Šubat-Enlil. Today, the ancient city walls still rise five to fifteen meters above plains of northeastern Syria, enclosing an area of 90 hectares, nearly a square kilometer. The 15 hectare "Acropolis", the oldest and highest part of the site, founded about 5,000 BC, dominates the surrounding 65 hectare "Lower Town," which like the city wall dates to the urbanization of this settlement at ca. 2600 BC...

Student Commentaries Published in Perseus
One goal of the Perseids Project is to engage humanities students in research and enable them to contribute to the open access resources on which the Perseus Digital Library is built. Tufts students in Professor Marie-Claire Beaulieu’s Fall 2013 Greek Mythology class completed commentaries on myths in selected texts and artifacts through the Perseids platform. The student commentaries were reviewed by graduate teaching assistants Julia Lenzi and Timothy Buckingham, who worked with the students to revise their work when necessary. Those commentaries that were accepted for publication are now available as reading aids on the Perseus platform, via the new annotations widget. This widget appears on the right side of the text display for only those passages of text on which commentaries are available. The Homeric Hymn 7 to Dionysus is an example of a text which has several commentaries available for it. For artifacts with commentaries, the annotations widget appears on the left side of the screen above the artifact metadata. An example artifact is the vase Munich 8297.

Going forward we expect to continue to expand upon to the number and variety of annotations available for the Perseus resources.

New Testament Greek Vocabulary Assessment
The eventual goal of this site is to quickly assess the vocabulary coverage of a student learning New Testament Greek and to better understand coverage across the lexicon at various stages in a student’s progression.

The immediate goal is just to gather some data. So the site will just test you on your knowledge of the meaning of various nouns in the Greek New Testament.

There are no user accounts so there’s no need to sign up or anything. You can answer as many questions as you like and come back to this site at any time. It’s completely anonymous.

You can be an established Greek scholar or just a beginning student (in fact, I need a wide range of knowledge levels) but you should have learnt at least a small vocabulary.

Dickinson College Commentaries
Latin and Greek texts with explanatory notes, vocabulary, and graphic, video and audio elements, for readers of Greek and Latin. Submissions to the series are welcome.

DCC publishes born digital scholarly commentaries on classical texts intended to provide an effective reading and learning experience for classicists at all levels of experience. In contrast to other digital projects that conceive of classical texts as a database, or foreground hypertext—focusing on chunking or linking the text—DCC aims at a readerly approach, and one responsive to the needs of readers, teachers, and students. Texts are presented in a clean, readable format, with custom-authored notes, specially selected images and maps, and original audio and video content. Core vocabulary lists of the most common Latin and Greek words are provided, and all words not in the core lists are fully and accurately defined in running vocabulary lists that accompany each section of text. DCC commentaries are peer-reviewed, citable scholarly resources, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License. Funding for this project comes from the Roberts Fund for Classical Studies at Dickinson College. The Project Director is Chris Francese, Professor of Classical Studies at Dickinson College (francese@dickinson.edu).

Ausgrabung in Tall Schech Hamad
http://www.schechhamad.de/bilder/logo/logo.gif

ANCIENT NEAR EAST MONOGRAPHS / MONOGRAFIAS SOBRE EL ANTIGUO CERCANO ORIENTE
The focus of this ambitious series is on the ancient Near East, including ancient Israel and its literature, from the early Neolithic to the early Hellenistic eras. Studies that are heavily philological or archaeological are both suited to this series, and can take full advantage of the hypertext capabilities of “born digital” publication. Multiple author and edited volumes as well as monographs are accepted. Proposals and manuscripts may be submitted in either English or Spanish. Manuscripts are peer reviewed by at least two scholars in the area before acceptance. Published volumes will be held to the high scholarly standards of the SBL and the Centro de Estudios de Historia del Antiguo Oriente. The partnership between the SBL and the Centro de Estudios de Historia del Antiguo Oriente was initiated under the auspices of SBL’s International Cooperation Initiative (ICI) and represents the type of international scholarly exchange that is the goal of ICI.
