The Ashmolean Latin Inscriptions Project

The Ashmolean Latin Inscriptions Project (AshLI) is a three-way collaboration between Warwick University, Oxford University (Centre for the Study of Ancient documents/ Classics Faculty) and the Ashmolean Museum, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
The project aims to:
  • Research and catalogue all the Latin inscriptions in the Ashmolean Museum. Make this catalogue available online.
  • Set up new displays of Latin inscriptions in the Ashmolean.
  • Produce teaching resources that can be downloaded from the Ashmolean Education Department for use in Primary and Secondary schools. Devise new museum visits for students who are interested in the lives of the Romans.
The project has received AHRC follow on funding to:
  • Organise two workshops to promote dialogue between museum curators and classical epigraphers.
  • Adapt the educational resources which we have developed, which were designed for the UK, for use in North America and Australasia.
  • Create a collection of replicas to aid interactive engagement, which will be available for Sutton Scholars, visually impaired visitors to the museum, & for educational visits.
  • Participate in the Warwick Sutton Scholars scheme by offering workshops on the Roman world
