Archäologische Sammlung Zurich at CDLI
We are pleased to announce the digital capture of the cuneiform collection of the Archäologische Sammlung of the University of Zurich, Switzerland <http://www.archinst.uzh.ch/Museum.html/>, and the addition of this content to the web offerings of the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative (CDLI <http://www.cdli.ucla.edu/>).

Following an exhibition organised in 2008 by the Museum staff, including Elena Mango, the University of Zurich with Christoph Uehlinger and Margaret Jaques, and the Vorderasiatische Museum in Berlin with the help of Joachim Marzahn, the texts were edited in a catalogue entitled “Könige am Tigris – Medien assyrischer Herrschaft” which is on sale at the Museum.

A series of e-mail communications among the Museum staff, including Martin Bürge,  and Christoph Reusser, Margaret Jaques of the University of Zurich, and Bertrand Lafont of CDLI led to the creation of a catalogue of inscribed artifacts ; the photos are professional images made available to CDLI courtesy of the Museum. Mr. Martin Bürge of the Museum created an exceptional work environment to make this mission successful.

The 35 cuneiform artifacts in the Museum consist of Assyrian monumental royal inscriptions of Assurbanipal, bricks of Shalmaneser, inscriptions of Tiglath-pileser III, an Esarhaddon royal inscription, 10 bricks of Nebuchadnezzar, a tablet of the lexical list Nabnitu published in MSL 16, and unpublished Neo-Babylonian and Neo-Assyrian administrative texts. All the documents were given or bought at the beginning of the 19th century.

For the University of Zurich, Margaret Jaques (margaret.jaques@uzh.ch); for the Archäologische Sammlung of the University of Zurich, Martin Bürge (martin.buerge@archinst.uzh.ch).
