Women Biblical Scholars
Throughout history women have loved, studied, and taught the Jewish and Christian scriptures. Unfortunately, many of us have never heard of these biblical scholars and thinkers. Often they are left out of history books and classroom discussion. The goal of this blog is to draw attention to the works of women and discover what they contribute to our understanding of the biblical texts. With greater awareness, this scholarship can shape course curriculum, homilies, public discourse, and academia itself.
The blog includes profiles, interviews, book reviews, and other means to spotlight women biblical scholars. Of particular interest are scholars whose work contributes to the thriving of faith communities and advances helpful discussion of religion in our contemporary world. Check out the developing Index of Scholars for names and works of women across history. This makes it easy to find the primary texts you want. Also don’t miss seeing today’s women biblical scholars in action–our growing Video and Audio page gives you access to lectures, presentations, and interviews. Finally, if you are looking for a dictionary on women interpreters or want to read a memoir or biography of a female scholar be sure to stop by the Books page.
If you know of something that should be added to this site, would like to contribute a guest post, or help develop the index of scholars please e-mail: women.biblical.scholars@gmail.com.

The goal of this page is to create a database of scholars who are women that lists bibliographic material. Often scholarship by women is overlooked because people don’t know where or how to find it. This page makes it easy to locate and use the work of these scholars. Primary sources are a priority, along with secondary sources as relevant. The list is indexed alphabetically within specific time periods. Where a woman’s lifetime straddles two time periods, she will be categorized based on date of birth. To jump to a particular time period click the link below, otherwise scroll down to see all entries. Also be sure to check out the excellent resource:  Marion Ann Taylor ed., Handbook of Women Biblical Interpreters: A Historical and Biographical Guide. This handbook provides more entries and biographical information than listed here, including women whose writing is not extant.

We need help developing this site, particularly with indexing deceased scholars from previous generations. If you are interested in being on a team to build this database please e-mail: women.biblical.scholars@gmail.com. Any little thing helps. Perhaps you have done a relevant study or you have bibliography on a particular scholar?

Check out these excellent audio-visual resources featuring biblical scholars in action. They include lectures and general interviews. Most are categorized by New Testament or Old Testament/Hebrew Bible (this includes non-exegetical content that is relevant to the category such as archaeology in the Roman period, etc.) These are ideal for use in the classroom, as take-home course assignments, or in lay level Bible studies. Lengths vary from three minute snap-shots to hour long presentations. New videos and audio will be added as they become available.
