The Corpus
The Writing Sumerian corpus currently comprises 113,770 Sumerian texts in 161,405 transliterations, dating from the Fara period to the Early Old Babylonian period. Most of these transliterations were, with kind permission, taken from the collections of the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative (CDLI) and the Database of Neo-Sumerian Texts (BDTNS). Others were prepared at LMU München by Walther Sallaberger and his team with financial support from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, as part of an effort to create a basis for a Sumerian glossary.
The corpus is intended as a research tool for the study of Sumerian writing and language. It seeks to make a significant part of the Sumerian language material available in a consistent, easily accessible, fully searchable form while providing the most relevant context information.
It was conceived and implemented by Marc Endesfelder as part of the project Writing Sumerian at LMU München. The project, which is directed by Walther Sallaberger and financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, seeks to conduct a comprehensive analysis of third millennium Sumerian orthography, relying on this corpus as its primary data source and augmenting and refining it as it progresses.
