Euporia: Open Access Philosophy & Philosophy of Open Science
 logo
Euporia is a platform aimed to foster the searchability and discoverability of Open Access philosophical resources and scholarly contributions on topics related to the philosophy of Open Science, digital culture and research ethics. Euporia pursues a twofold goal: to stimulate the use of Open Access philosophical literature and to intensify a critical discussion on Open Science and the impact of digitality on contemporary culture. Therefore the blog is intended to be a portal presenting, on the one hand, all the available Open Access primary and secondary literature in philosophy, and on the other hand all relevant contributions to the philosophy of Open Science, the philosophy of digital culture and research ethics.
The ancient greek word euporia (εὐπορία), according to the LSJ Lexicon, means “ease, facility, of doing a thing” and, as opposed to poverty, “plenty, abundance”. In the philosophical tradition, it was also used in opposition to aporia (ἀπορία), as “solution of doubts or difficulties”. Euporos is the person  “full of resources or devices, ingenious, inventive”. Last, but not least, we liked the random assonance with the word euphoria.

Studies in Ancient Art and Civilization
ISSN: 0083-4300
Online-ISSN:2449-867X
Studies in Ancient Art and Civilization were created in 1991 as an irregular series which in the first place served as a forum for the presentation of the Jagiellonian University Institute of Archaeology and studies provided by its researchers. The series was originated by professor Joachim Śliwa, who was also its first Editor in Chief, and since 2010 this function has been fulfilled by professor Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka. Since vol. 10 (2007) SAAC has become a regular yearly periodical. Until present fifteen volumes have been published, among them two monographic studies (vols. 3 and 11, the latter being Pontika 2006 conference proceedings edited by E. Papuci-Władyka) and three volumes dedicated to distinguished researchers from our Institute on occasion of their jubilees (vols. 8 – professor Maria Ludwika Bernhard, 14 – professor Joachim Śliwa and 15 – professor Janusz A. Ostrowski). SAAC publishes papers in the fields of archaeology, art and civilization of ancient Egypt, the Near East, Greece and its colonies, Cyprus and Rome, as well as other, non-Mediterranean ancient civilizations, and also in history of archaeology, collecting of antiquities and reception of ancient culture in modern Europe. Special attention is being given to topics concerning predynastic and early-dynastic Egypt, the Greek and Roman periods in the Black Sea region, and archaeology of Cyprus, due to the excavations conducted by researchers from our Institute in these areas. Objects and artefacts from these excavations are being published in SAAC.

Middle Eastern & North African Newspapers: An Open Access collection sponsored by the Center for Research Libraries
From the Ottoman Empire to the Arab Spring, the countries of the Middle East and North Africa have stood at the crossroads of history. The Middle Eastern & North African Newspapers collection includes publications from across this dynamic region, providing unique insights into the history of individual countries, as well as broad viewpoints on key historic events from the late nineteenth century through the mid twentieth century.
Researchers will find a wealth of unique content from the Middle East and North Africa, much of which has never been digitized or available as open access material. Content in the Middle Eastern & North African Newspapers collection is predominantly in Arabic, but also includes key titles in English and French. The collection comprises out-of-copyright, orphaned content, and includes titles such as Al-Iqbal (Lebanon), Al Akhaa al Watani (Iraq), Tangier Gazette (Morocco) and La Vérité (Algeria).
The Middle Eastern & North African Newspapers collection is part of East View’s Global Press Archive® (GPA) program. Open Access to this collection is made possible through the generous support of the Center for Research Libraries and its member institutions.

I sometimes get asked the status of various Greek-related projects I’m working on. Because I tend to work in fits and starts and many smaller projects are just individual pieces of a much larger vision, I thought it would be useful to maintain a single page that outlines all the stuff I’m working on and the status of each part.
    Also see my Now page.

    greek-textsgreek-texts

Collaboration on Greek texts and vocabulary lists for learners.

    Diorisis Ancient Greek Corpusdiorisis

    Improving this tagged corpus.

Python tools for exploring vocabulary stats and orderingvocabulary-tools

See Consolidating Vocabulary Coverage and Ordering Tools.

    Apostolic Fathersapostolic-fathers

Correcting the Perseus / Open Greek and Latin Project text of Lake and eventually lemmatising and parsing it.

    Python library for Greek Inflectiongreek-inflexion

A Python 3 library for generating (and analyzing) Ancient Greek inflectional paradigms (initially verbs).
This builds on inflexion library, adding a stem database and ending rules for Ancient Greek along with accentuation logic built on top of greek-accentuation library.
It can precisely generate (i.e. without over-generation) all the forms in the verbal paradigms in Louise Pratt’s The Essentials of Greek Grammar, Helma Dik’s Nifty Greek Handouts, and Keller and Russell’s Learn to Read Greek.
For each generated form, it can show the stem, ending, and morphophonological (sandhi) rule applied.
Being used to build the comprehensive stem database for the Morphological Lexicon.

Generic Code for Morphological Generation and Parsinginflexion

Non-Greek-specific library for doing inflection with stems, endings and sandhi rules, used by greek-inflexion.
See the blog post for more details.

    Python library for Greek Accentuationgreek-accentuation

A Python 3 library for accenting (and analyzing the accentuation of) Ancient Greek words. There’s definitely some internal hackery but it successfully works in accenting the output of greek-inflexion perfectly.

    Morphological Tagging of the SBLGNTmorphgnt/sblgnt

    • in the short term, developing a new tagging scheme and a better distinction between morphological and syntactic annotation, see Proposal for a New Tagging Scheme
    • in the longer term, planning richer morphological information (based on morphological lexicon work)
    • correlating analysis with Robinson-style tagging of Tischendorf by Ulrik Sandborg-Petersen, see tisch-merge/rulelist.txt
    • maintaining consistency with GBI Syntax Trees

    REST API for MorphGNTmorphgnt/morphgnt-api

    Experimental REST API for MorphGNT.

Morphological Lexicon of New Testament Greekmorphgnt/morphological-lexicon (out of date)

    • building a comprehensive analytical lexicon with rich morphological information including morphophonology, derivation, inflectional classes, stems and complete principal parts (see above)
    • working through inconsistencies in headword choices (which will improve SBLGNT tagging above as well)
    • working on a network of derivational morphology
NOTE: The repo does not yet reflect the work done the last year on verb inflection (see above) but will in late 2016.

Python + XeTeX tool for generating Greek readersgreek-reader

Simple step on the path to the much more ambitious graded reader work below, this beta-quality tool can be used for generating traditional readers based on MorphGNT and (optionally) the Morphological Lexicon.
Most of the improvements to this will come from better data sources (see other projects on this page) but there’s an experimental SILE backend being worked on.

    Python library for Unicode Collationpyuca

Production-ready library for sorting of Polytonic Greek (and most other languages).

Python library for accessing MorphGNT SBLGNTmorphgnt/py-sblgnt

A pip-installable Python library for accessing the morphologically tagged SBLGNT.

    Python Greek Utilitiesgreek-utils

Alpha-quality library with various utilities useful for dealing with Ancient Greek texts.

    Greek Infinitives Listmorphgnt/infinitives

By popular request (okay, Jonathan Robie asked me), a list of all present and aorist infinitives for Greek verbs in the New Testament. This is programmatically generated by code in the (now superceded) greek-inflection repo and the stem database being developed as part of the Morphological Lexicon.

    New Kind of Graded Readergraded-reader

Tools for creating computer-generated, corpus-driven graded readers.
    • the analyses outlined above for the morphological lexicon is an important step to making progress on the graded reader work

    Learning Greeklearning-greek

A site drawing from all of the above to help people learn Biblical Greek and research how to improve the way people learn Biblical Greek.
    • building framework for authoring learning activities
    • building framework for text annotation

greek-texts: organising collaboration on Greek texts and vocabulary lists for learners

    Who We Are

    What We’re Producing

    • openly-licensed base texts following agreed-upon conventions
    • tooling which produces a static website, EPUB, print-ready version, and (where appropriate) CTS TEI XML for contributing back to OGL / showing in Scaife
    • corpus-based vocabulary lists for language learners (and producers of graded Greek reading material)
    • linguistic annotation necessary to do things like track vocabulary, produce context-specific glosses, etc.

    Texts

    Ancient Texts

    18th–20th Century Greek Readers

    Born-Digital Readers

    Non-Text Data

    Some relevant data projects
plus other stuff I still need to open up consolidating vocabulary lists like DCC and the “Major 80” and also lists of principal parts.

    Tools

Some relevant code projects (plus a few more closed-source still to open up)
Although note that the point of the greek-texts project is mostly producing texts and data. The tools are mostly a side-effect.

The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies intends to promote the hermeneutical approach to the study of the Scriptures generally known as Inductive Biblical Studies. By Inductive Biblical Study (IBS) we mean the hermeneutical movement initiated by William Rainey Harper and Wilbert Webster White that was embodied in the curriculum of The Biblical Seminary in New York founded in 1900. This approach had precursors in the history of interpretation and has since the beginning of the twentieth-century enjoyed widespread dissemination, being taught at such institutions as Princeton Theological Seminary, Columbia Theological Seminary, Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, Fuller Theological Seminary, Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries, Azusa Pacific University, and Asbury Theological Seminary, as well as hundreds of other institutions and organizations around the world. For more detailed description of IBS, see Bauer and Traina, Inductive Bible Study: A Comprehensive Guide to the Practice of Hermeneutics (Grand Rapids: Baker, 2011) and the IBS website at http://www.inductivebiblicalstudy.com/.

Understanding Relations Between Scripts II: Early Alphabets (Oxbow Books, 2020) brings together ten experts on ancient writing, languages and archaeology to present a set of diverse studies on the early development of alphabetic writing systems and their spread across the Levant and Mediterranean during the second and first millennia BC. By taking an interdisciplinary perspective, it sheds new light on alphabetic writing not just as a tool for recording language but also as an element of culture.
This book is published with open access, and can be downloaded for free from this page, from our publications page or on the publisher’s website (where you need to add it to your basket but will not be charged).
Below you can choose to download individual chapters or the full text (or both!).
