The Body and Mask in Ancient Theatre Space - Digitised masks archive
by Martin Blazeby
The digitised masks archived on the project website have been recorded using photogrammetry and laser scanning technologies (see: Project pipeline - Mask scanning process). All masks have been subjected to varying degrees of post scan manipulation using 3D editing software and a selection chosen for rapid prototyping (see: Project pipeline - Rapid prototyping process). Some of the masks have also been 'virtually' decorated used in preparation for full-sized mask construction (see: Project pipeline - Virtual mask decoration process).
The masks are categorised by type and listed by their respective museum accession numbers. Other classifications i.e. Webster, Monuments Illustrating New Comedy are also referenced where possible.

The Body and Mask in Ancient Theatre Space - home page
The project has applied advanced 3D visualisation technologies to study the practice of ancient masked theatre. It has made 3D scans of Greek and Roman mask miniatures relating both to comedy and tragedy, and reproduced them at life-size by rapid prototyping. The project has used motion capture and chromakey video technologies to record experimentation with these masks by practitioners of Asiatic and European traditions, and has situated the results in 3D models of ancient theatre spaces.

Rome in Egypt: Roman Temples for Egyptian Gods

Rome in Egypt: Roman Temples for Egyptian Gods
The availability of an updated repertory of the temples built in Egypt by Roman emperors for autochthonous cults is a fundamental tool for every kind of research on Roman Egypt. TheTopographical Bibliography of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Statues, Reliefs and Paintings, started by Bertha Porter and Rosalind Moss, shows Roman presence on more than 50 sacred buildings from the Nile Delta until the island of Bigeh. Intense and well known was also Roman activity in Nubia.

New subsequent archaeological researches make possible further enlargements of this picture: among many examples, it is sufficient to mention here the recent important discoveries in the oases of the Western Desert.

This site, outcome of a research project funded by the Italian Ministry for University and Research (MIUR) in 2004-2005 and directed by Edda Bresciani, aims to provide:

• A repertory of Roman temples in Egypt, from the Delta to Philae, with the most recently available information. The list of monuments and their bibliography are being continually updated.

• A multimedia research tool to make available, thanks to the Internet flexibility, plans, photographs, drawings, space oriented and navigable maps and links, related to the temples included in this site, wherever it is possible.

• A searching tool allowing to sort the information for geographical sites or for emperors, and to retrieve the bibliography for authors all over the website.

Only additional bibliography, absent in previous editions of the Topographical Bibliography, is given here. Porter-Moss (PM) reference, when existing, is mentioned at the beginning of each temple file.
At the moment, Nubian temples are not included in this site.

Rome in Egyptis an evolving Web resource. It is our hope that it becomes a starting point for future research on the subject. To do it, the cooperation with all the researchers working in the field of Egyptology, archaeology and Roman history is fundamental and we thank in advance all colleagues who will send us any new information and/or material.

Please see the News section of this Web site for periodic updates.

Reviews in Digital Humanities
Community banner
Reviews in Digital Humanities, edited by Jennifer Guiliano (IUPUI) and Roopika Risam (Salem State University), is the pilot of a peer-reviewed journal that facilitates scholarly evaluation of digital humanities work and its outputs.

The goal of Reviews in Digital Humanities is to foster critical discourse about digital scholarship in a format useful to other scholars. The journal publishes project overviews written by project directors alongside peer reviews written by members of the digital humanities communities. Projects submitted for review are also listed in our project registry, unless otherwise requested by project directors.

Projects within the scope of Reviews in Digital Humanities may include, but are not limited to: digital archives, multimedia or multimodal scholarship, digital exhibits, visualizations, digital games, digital tools, and digital projects. Importantly, it is expected that the outputs selected for review in this journal will blend humanistic and technological inquiry.

We accept submissions of projects in a broad range of methods, disciplines, scopes, and scales. We particularly encourage submission of digital scholarship in critical ethnic, African diaspora, indigenous, Latinx, and postcolonial studies.

The deadline for our first call for projects is September 1, 2019. We welcome early expressions of interest as well. For inquiries or to submit your project for review, please contact the editors, Jennifer Guiliano and Roopika Risam, at reviewsindigitalhumanities@gmail.com.

Online Catalogue of Byzantine Coins

The collection of over 12,000 Byzantine coins at Dumbarton Oaks is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the world. The majority of these specimens were catalogued in six print volumes: Catalogue of Byzantine Coins in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection and in the Whittemore Collection, edited by Alfred Bellinger (vol. 1), Philip Grierson (vols. 2–3, 5), and Michael Hendy (vol. 4), and Catalogue of Late Roman Coins in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection and in the Whittemore Collection, edited by Philip Grierson and Melinda Mays.
With ongoing acquisitions of objects, many of the coins that have entered the collection after the release of the print catalogues have remained unpublished. This online catalogue first presents these specimens, and eventually will provide online access to the full collection.

Using the Catalogue

Search the Catalogue by keyword, authority, date, mint, metal, and denomination. In addition to high-resolution images and object metadata, each record includes a commentary and short-form bibliography (author, title, and page and/or catalogue number). For a full reference list, including abbreviations, see the Bibliography.
On the occasion of the launch of this online catalogue, Cécile Morrisson, advisor for Byzantine numismatics at Dumbarton Oaks from 1998 to 2018, has provided a History of the Collection and of the Unpublished Accessions. A list of Collectors, Dealers, and Donorssupplements this history.
Additional resources for coins include do
wnloadable versions of the published coin catalogues and two online exhibits, one featuring Byzantine Emperors of Coins, and the other, Coinage of the Byzantine Empire (alternate link), focusing on the history of the monetary system and its denominations and imperial and religious representations.
