Landsberger Archives in Leipzig and Jerusalem

Benno Landsberger (Friedek 21 April 1890 - Chicago 26 April 1968), from 1908 a student and from 1929-1935 professor at the university of Leipzig, decisively shaped the field of Ancient Near Eastern studies in the 20th c. This website intends to present archival documents pertaining to Landsberger from two universities, Leipzig and Jerusalem, in order to foster further research on one of the greatest masters of the discipline.

The Leipzig material has been kept for more than 80 years at the university of Leipzig and is now in the possession of the Altorientalisches Institut. It consists mainly of letters to and from Landsberger during the period of his professorship and the period of his early exile in Ankara, Turkey.

The Jerusalem material is part of Landsberger's estate, which he bequeathed to the Institute of Archaeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. For many years now his private library has formed part of the library of Assyriology at the Institute of Archaeology. In April 2012, while cataloguing material stored in the basement of the Institute of Archaeology, Nathan Wasserman found two boxes and identified them as containing archival documents of Landsberger - letters, manuscripts of public lectures, some photos, and many notes and notebooks of his early days as a student in Leipzig - hitherto totally unknown. The material was collected and arranged by Wasserman and parts of it were scanned for public reference (by Mijal Ribco). In June 2012 Michael P. Streck went over the documents and prepared a preliminary catalogue of the estate, which was subsequently presented on a website now replaced by this site.

SBLCentral
sbl logo
SBLCentral is SBL’s response to the pressures that biblical scholars face: increased specialization of the field, increased disaggregation of scholarly publications, decreased discoverability of publications, increased strain on traditional research hubs (libraries), and lack of access to resources in many parts of the world, as well as among unaffiliated scholars and adjunct faculty.
As a nonprofit academic publisher and learned society, SBL looked for the sweet spot in which everyone wins: scholars, publishers, libraries, library services, and institutions of higher education. SBLCentral fills a niche not currently being served and fosters each stakeholder's success. SBL rightly serves as a catalyst, not a competitor, by creating a mutually beneficial hub.
What is its simple idea? SBLCentral is a research platform to support participants in the entire interdisciplinary ecosystem of biblical, religious, and theological studies, including scholars, students, publishers, publishing associations, and libraries and their institutions. A learned society exists at the intersection of these stakeholders. Learned societies foster collaboration and, at their best, innovation. Like its Annual Meeting, a learned society facilitates networking, creates opportunity, fosters the production of knowledge, and provides opportunities for professional development. Institutions, publishers, and scholars depend on the hub learned societies provide. SBL’s job is to serve each of these. SBLCentral embodies the adage that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
SBLCentral was conceived in this context. By creating granular discovery of content (books, book reviews, conference papers, and journal articles) naturally identified with the field's research specializations, our objective is for this resource to be a core tool to the research and professional development of its members.

Revue archéologique
ISSN: 0035-0737
ISSN en ligne: 2104-3868
http://www.cairn.info/vign_rev/ARCH/ARCH_121_L148.jpg
