The Canadian Classical Bulletin (CCB) is the official electronic bulletin of the CAC and is published on the 15th of every month, with special issues when necessary. Issues are mailed directly to subscribers’ e-mail accounts and are subsequently archived on the CCB Archive pages.
The CCB serves as the organ for the efficient dissemination of official announcements of the CAC. Our hope is that it will also help scholars, students, and other friends of Classics keep abreast of relevant developments in Canada and abroad.

A full archive of the Bulletin can be found in the Electronic Collection of Library and Archives Canada.

Current Status of the Tell Ain Dara Temple | Read the Report
ASOR CHI geospatial analysis indicates that an explosion damaged the Ain Dara temple in northwest Syria on or before January 22, 2018. The Ain Dara temple is the best-preserved example of Syro-Hittite religious architecture from the late second and early first millennia BCE. It is elaborately decorated with basalt sculpture and reliefs. Larger-than-life human footprints carved into the temple’s stone thresholds are unique to the building. It is also considered to be a close parallel to the contemporary Temple of Solomon, which is known from descriptions in the Old Testament.Current Status of the Raqqa Museum | Read the ReportThe Raqqa Museum and its storerooms in nearby Heraqla are dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of the cultural heritage of Raqqa Governorate. Though small in comparison to the museums in Damascus and Aleppo, the Raqqa Museum contains an important collection of excavated remains that date from prehistory to the modern day. Prior to the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011, the museum was an important local employer and a symbol of civic pride and Raqqawi identity. The Recapture of Palmyra | Read the ReportThe region of Palmyra and modern Tadmor was taken from ISIL militants by a coalition of Syrian, Russian, and Iranian military forces on March 24, 2016. This report will provide a summary of what is known to have taken place in the area since September 2015, including a synopsis of the humanitarian and military situation since then and the effects the conflict has had on the cultural heritage of ancient and modern Palmyra. This report is a preliminary analysis of a rapidly developing event, and initial findings may be subject to change as further information is revealed. For a more complete summary of the situation in Palmyra, please refer to the upcoming Weekly Report 85–86 (reporting period ending March 29, 2016) and Weekly Report 87–88 (reporting period ending April 12, 2016).
Update on the Situation in Palmyra | Read the ReportSince its capture by ISIL militants in May 2015, the region around the ancient city of Palmyra (modern Tadmor) has been in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, which has escalated dramatically in recent weeks. This report will provide a summary of the current situation in Palmyra and the effects of the conflict on its people and cultural heritage. Atrocities include attacks on civilians and mass abductions. Intentional damage to the cultural materials of the local populations is widespread, including the destruction of Islamic and Christian religious sites, as well as severe damage to the architectural remains within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Palmyra. Confirmed damage at this archaeological site includes the destruction of the Baalshamin Temple, the Temple of Bel, and at least seven tower tombs within the Valley of the Tombs.
Palmyra: Heritage Adrift | Read the ReportThis special report by Cheikhmous Ali (Association for the Protection of Syrian Archaeology) provides a detailed account of damage done to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Palmyra between February 2012 and June 2015.
Special Report on the Importance of Palmyra | Read the ReportThe ancient city of Palmyra stands out as one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Syria and, indeed, the world. Following the takeover of the site and the adjacent town of Tadmor by ISIL, Palmyra has been in the news daily. The purpose of this report is to provide a concise introduction to the site and its importance so that the international community can better understand why it should be saved.
Report on the Destruction of the NW Palace at Nimrud | Read the ReportA video released by ISIL on April 11, 2015, provided vivid and shocking documentation of the deliberate destruction of relief sculpture and standing architecture at the famous archaeological site of Nimrud, located in northern Iraq near the city of Mosul. The video documents ISIL militants vandalizing, smashing, and piling up relief slabs using hand tools, power tools, and vehicles; it then shows the detonation of the relief slabs and large parts of the Northwest Palace using a series of barrel bombs. This report provides a brief introduction to the site of Nimrud and summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the destruction of the Northwest Palace.

The page you are currently viewing is a web interface for the pilot version of Amharic corpus. The corpus size so far is about 23 millions tokens. The texts of the corpus have been automatically annotated with a part of speech analyzer. There is a disambiguation in the corpus, i. e. each token is annotated with one appropriate analyse.
Most tokens in the current version of the corpus belong to news texts. The rest of the texts include blogs and nonfiction (Wikipedia articles and essays). Eventually we intend to increase the number and diversity of texts and add fiction texts to the corpus. The latest updateMay 25th, 2016.Created byMaria Obedkova under guidance of Boris Orekhov within the project of HSE School of LinguisticsWeb interfaceThe search platform of the Eastern Armenian National Corpus (EANC) was used for this corpus. You can read about making search queries at EANC help page.
This is a pilot version of the Annotated Corpus of Luwian Texts (ACLT). It comprises the analysis the Iron Age Luwian texts, most of which are included in the published volumes of the Corpus of Hieroglyphic Luwian Inscriptions (CHLI) by J. David Hawkins, as well as the cuneiform texts of the Bronze Age published in the Die keilschrift-luwischen Texte in Umschrift (StBoT 30) by Frank Starke. This initial phase of this project has been completed with the assistance of a research grant of the Corpus Linguistics Program sponsored by the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Ilya Yakubovich acted as the principal investigator of the project, whose team consisted of Dr. Timofey Arkhangelskiy, Mr. Sergey Boroday, and Dr. Alexei Kassian. The corpus extension is planned for the near future, with the eventual goal of preparing a corpus-based comparative dictionary of all the minor Anatolian languages. The work on the project was further facilitated by a Humboldt Fellowship tenured by Ilya Yakubovich at the Philipps Universität Marburg in 2013–15. Special thanks go to Martien Dillo for his corrections and suggestions.
A special feature of the Luwian corpus, which sets it apart from the electronic corpora of better-known languages, is the absence of an up-to-date Luwian dictionary in hieroglyphic transmission. The compilation of the corpus could hardly be separated from deciphering the Anatolian Hieroglyphs and interpreting the Luwian lexicon. This is why the interface of the corpus contains the provisional Luwian glossaries, whose lemmata can be used as entries for automated search. For practical reasons, the glossaries to the cuneiform and hieroglyphic corpora are given separately, even though they reflect essentially the same language. Ilya Yakubovich takes the entire responsibility for the interpretative transliteration conventions adopted in the glossary. The narrow transliteration of the hieroglyphic texts used in the corpus generally follows the system of the CHLI but incorporates several modifications reflecting the recent progress in the Luwian Studies. The narrow transliteration of the cuneiform texts reflects the conventions of StBoT 30 and its computer adaptation by H. Craig Melchert. Note that the present corpus, as a rule, does not contain isolated Luwian forms occurring in Hittite texts.
The present corpus is a work in progress and its direct citation is not recommended. The corrections of both linguistic and technical errors will be warmly welcomed. For linguistic issues, please contact Ilya Yakubovich (sogdiana783@gmail.com). For possible problems with computer interface, please contact Timofey Arkhangelskiy (timarkh @gmail.com). If you wish to cite the new interpretations offered in the corpus, you can give credit to the ACLT (together with its URL). Original interpretations implicit in the database can be cited with reference to the personal communication of Ilya Yakubovich. If you wish to refer to the sketch of the Luwian grammar available at this website, please cite it according to its principal location as: Ilya Yakubovich, “The Luwian Language”. Concept:
Hittite Divine Names (HDN) is an open, collaborative, flexible, and in-progress digital database of the divine names attested in the Hittite written sources. The database pursues two goals. On the one side, it aims at providing an update to van Gessel’s Onomasticon of the Hittite Pantheon (1998, 2001). On the other side, it is conceived as a tool for quantitative analysis in the frame of a broader study on selected aspects of Hittite religion. Together with the related database Hittite Personal Names, HDN has been conceived and initiated by M. Cammarosanoin 2016 within the DFG-funded research project Hittite Local Cults.
