Studies in Late Antiquity
Studies in Late Antiquity: A Journal (SLA) is a new online quarterly journal published by the University of California Press. The journal is scheduled to launch in February 2017.

SLA aims to publish scholarship on a wide range of topics pertaining to the world of Late Antiquity (150 – 750 CE). A defining focus of the journal is fostering multi- and interdisciplinary research that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the Mediterranean with other parts of the late ancient world. Arabic and Latin Glossary
edited by Dag Nikolaus Hasse
with the assistance of Barbara Jockers, Katrin Fischer, Reinhard Kiesler & Jens Ole Schmitt
The Arabic and Latin Glossary is a dictionary of the vocabulary of the Arabic–Latin translations of the Middle Ages. It unites the entries of all existing Arabic–Latin glossaries in modern editions of medieval works.
The Glossary has a double aim: to improve our understanding of the Arabic influence in Europe, especially with respect to scientific vocabulary, and to provide a lexical tool for the understanding of Arabic and Latin scientific texts.
It is currently based on 42 sources, which cover medicine, philosophy, theology, astrology, astronomy, mathematics, optics, botany, and zoology. The texts were written by the following Arabic or Greek authors:
  • Abū Maʿšar (Albumasar)
  • Abū l-Ṣalt (Albuzale)
  • Aristotle
  • al-Biṭrūǧī (Alpetragius)
  • al-Fārābī (Alfarabius)
  • Ibn al-Ǧazzār
  • Ibn al-Hayṯam (Alhazen)
  • Ibn Rušd (Averroes)
  • Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdallāh Ibn Rušd (Averroes Iunior)
  • Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna)
  • Ibn Tūmart
  • al-Kindī (Alkindi)
  • Yūḥannā ibn Māsawayh (Mesue)
  • al-Nayrīzī (Anaritius)
  • Nicolaus Damascenus
  • Proclus
  • Ptolemy
  • al-Qabīṣī (Alcabitius)
  • Ibn Zakariyyāʾ al-Rāzī (Rhazes)
  • Ṯābit ibn Qurra (Thebit ben Corat)
The Glossary is growing constantly. At the moment, it contains parts of the letter A (a–alh; appro–assig), the entire letter B (bab–buz) and the entire letter C (cac–cyp).

Digital Giza: The Giza Project at Harvard University
http://giza.fas.harvard.edu/static/images/pageheader-bg-slim4.jpg
The Giza Project began in 2000 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with the goal of digitizing all of the archaeological documentation from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston – Harvard University expedition to Giza, Egypt (circa. 1904-1947) and making that information freely available online for anyone to use. Since moving to Harvard in 2011, the Project has expanded its scope, partnering with other institutions around the world that excavated at Giza, to bring together as much data as possible about this complex site. The process of integrating and standardizing all of these records is ongoing.

In addition, the Project has utilized this vast quantity of information to begin building a 3D virtual reconstruction of the Giza Plateau as it may have looked when first built, providing new ways to sightsee, explore, and learn about the pyramids and their surrounding cemeteries. To date, we have modeled approximately 20 tombs and monuments in detail, with many hundreds more still to be done.

With support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, we are currently developing Digital Giza, a website which seeks to integrate this virtual environment with more than a hundred years of scholarly research about Giza, using cutting edge technology to study the distant past and preserve knowledge about this important cultural heritage site for the future. We continue to explore and develop new interactive ways to experience ancient Giza, including virtual and augmented reality apps, 3D printing of ancient artifacts, and online teaching initiatives.

For more information about how you can support the Giza Project, please see our support page.

ISSN 0391-2698 (print)
ISSN 2281-1044 (online)
http://www.fupress.net/public/journals/44/prometheus_cover.gif

The Aleppo Codex
http://www.aleppocodex.org/links/keterf1.jpg
The Aleppo Codex, the most splendid, old, and accurate manuscript of the Bible, is presented here for the first time in full color photograph, permitting the reader to examine the handiwork of the greatest of the Masoretes, who were active in Tiberias in the tenth century, Aharon Ben Moshe Ben Asher, and to gain an impression of the way the Masoretes worked to preserve the accurate text of the Bible and the reading tradition.
The Aleppo Codex is a full manuscript of the entire Bible, which was written in about 930. For more than a thousand years, the manuscript was preserved in its entirety in important Jewish communities in the Near East: Tiberias, Jerusalem, Egypt, and in the city of Aleppo in Syria. However, in 1947, after the United Nations Resolution establishing the State of Israel, it was damaged in riots that broke out in Syria. At first people thought that it had been completely destroyed. Later, however, it turned out that most of the manuscript had been saved and kept in a secret hiding place. In 1958, the Aleppo Codex was smuggled out of Syria to Jerusalem and delivered to the President of the State of Israel, Izhak Ben-Zvi.
Once the Aleppo Codex reached Israel, precise study of it began in many areas. Scholars of the Masora and of the text of the Bible took note of its special status among the manuscripts related to it. It was found that the match between the spelling of the Aleppo Codex and the comments of the Masora was excellent, far better than the match of other manuscripts. Similarly, the vocalization signs in the Aleppo Codex were examined and described, along with the cantillation marks, the system of ge’iyot (a kind of accent mark), and the apparatus of the Masora. All of these terms will be explained and demonstrated in this site...

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy (SAGP) was established December 28, 1953, in Rochester, NY and was initially known as the Presocratic Society. The idea for the Society began with a conversation between George Burch, Constantine Cavernos, and R.K. Sprague at a meeting of the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Association in 1952. SAGP considers the distributions of papers (in advance of their meetings) as one of its most important functions. The distribution has supported the high standard of writing and discussion. Paper contributions to the Society newsletter were traditionally invited, but in the 1990s they transitioned to a peer-review model. This is the first time a digital archive of their newsletters has been compiled and made available to the general public. ISSN Print 2475-6865.

Vol 16, No 17 (2013): Die politisch-historischen Motive in Aristophanes Batrachoi

Vol 16, No 16 (2013): Commune Ius Animantium (Clem. 1.18.2): Seneca's Naturalism and the Problem of Animal Rights

      1. Debating the Limits of Interspecific Violence: Ancient and Modern Bioethics
In the public debate of our times, scientific researchers and supporters of animal rights seem sometimes to pursue conflicting goals. Wide-ranging controversies have arisen over the bioethical implications of the use of animals in medical research, and a rift has apparently developed between two noble purposes: on the one hand, the discovery or refinement of therapeutic methods for human diseases; on the other, the respect for animal life and dignity. Seen from a similar perspective, human happiness and ecological behavior – the good of animals and that of men – run on parallel, if not diverging, tracks.

Vol 16, No 14 (2013): Iconographic Aspects of the Winged Demon of the Villa dei Misteri

The atmospheric and ambiguous Dionysiac megalography in the Villa dei Misteri– and above all its mysterious demon in a short dress, a pair of hunting boots and holding a scourge – has always attracted the attention of scholars. In the following pages I shall concentrate in particular on a few iconographic aspects, focusing in particular on Italic and Etruscan documents. My considerations will be aimed at clarifying the position of the demon in the previous and contemporary art and underlining – as far as possible – a few possible hints regarding its value.[1] Since the interpretation of the character and its function is particularly controversial among the scholars, a preliminary excursus on the status quaestionis is required.

Vol 16, No 12 (2013): Exotic Animals as a Manifestation of Royal luxuria. Rulers and Their Menageris: From the Pompe of Ptolemy II Philadelphu

The world which was left by Alexander the Great became the world of world of τρυφή[1] and luxuria. Pomp and circumstance made their way to the everyday life of the royal courts. The commodities imported from the East certified the wealth of the monarchs and emperors and were their means of propaganda. Among the Hellenistic and Roman rulers and aristocrats a fashion for collecting animal curiosities appeared. In the following paragraphs I shall discuss in particular this feature of luxury, which refers to acquiring interesting and rare animal species.[2]The issue of exotic animals in Greco-Roman antiquity is vast; therefore this paper shall concentrate especially on the aspect of royal collections of the exotic animals, and their function as luxury commodities.

Vol 16, No 11 (2013): The Behistun Inscription and the Res Gestae Divi Augusti

Intertextuality between Greek and Latin texts is well known and – in recent decades – has been well studied. It seems though that common elements also appear in earlier texts, from other, mostly oriental countries, such as Egypt, Persia or Israel. In this article we intend to demonstrate the case of a Persian and a Latin text, in order to support the hypothesis of a common Indo-European literature (in addition to an Indo-European mythology and language).

Vol 16, No 10 (2013): A New Opportunity for Regional Scholarly Partnership

An international EpiDoc XML Workshop took place between 03. and 07.09.2013. at the Sv. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. It was one of a series of events that include EpiDoc training and are held on several occasions in different institutions around the globe each year. Its target audience are scholars dealing with ancient epigraphy and willing to participate in digitization initiatives or start their own projects in this field.

Vol 16, No 9 (2013): Großer Begleiter des großen Werkes

Vol 16, No 8 (2013): Overview of the Georgian Research into Byzantine and Medieval Georgian Patristic Theology

Preliminary note: This report does not aim to display a complete picture of the topic ranging from the Early to the High Middle Ages. Rather, it intends to present some general information on the research carried out by Georgian scholars from the turn of the 20th century onward, providing at the same time only the general spectrum of the research in reference to the major achievements of the Patristic thought, as reflected in Georgian literary tradition. The reader will neither find the prolific activity of foreign Kartvelologists, for it deserves a special scholarly attention and could not be included in this brief bibliographical survey, the main goal of which is to focus on the efforts applied by Georgian scholars of communistic and post communistic times in reviving the nation-building historical identity, which is deeply rooted in the Byzantine cultural past.
Codicology (catalogues, descriptive catalogues, guides) and Paleography
As far as the literary legacy of the Middle Ages per se implies the national manuscript tradition, it is reasonable to begin on a more general scale with an introductory section on manuscripts, proceeding to the publications specifically in and circa the subject matter.

Vol 16, No 7 (2013): The Phenomenon of Mass Madness in Bacchae by Euripides

Scientists started studying masses, mass behaviour, and mass state of consciousness, including mass madness, in the 19th c. However, Euripides seems to have studied this phenomenon back in the 5th c. BC, as he shows extremely precise and deep knowledge of the problem in his works. We believe that mass madness is best described in his Bacchae, where Dionysian mania deliberately or accidentally spans almost a whole city, making people to behave in a similar manner. All female residents of Thebes suddenly go mad, abandon their homes and rush to Mount Cithaeron. It is Dionysus, who leads to the change of consciousness in the city – mass madness – by sending them μανία. Cadmus and blind prophet Tiresias try to join the mad women and Pentheus wants to curb madness in the city. Despite Pentheus' resistance, he too dresses like mad women and repeats their movements. At the end of the tragedy, Pentheus is torn apart by Theban women, including his mother Agave.

Vol 16, No 6 (2013): Hellenistic Koine and Modern Global Languages

In the history of mankind the phenomenon known as a world or global language has been developed based on various social-political, socio-economic or religious-cultural factors.

Vol 16, No 2 (2013): Considerazioni sulle performances musicali nelle feste demetriache in Sicilia

Vol 16, No 1 (2013): The Antiquity and the Ancient Georgian Literature

Interest in Classical and Byzantine cultural heritage had a centuries-old tradition in Old Georgia. There are two factors serving to explain the emergence of this tradition the significance of Greek culture, and the close Greek-Georgian contacts, particularly those of the ancient Georgian population with its pre-Hellenic counterpart, reflected in the mythology, literature and numerous historical sources of these countries.

And the winners have been announced. Projects dealing with the ancient world won every category except Best DH Blog Post or Series of Posts (which AWOL won last year):

      DH Awards 2016 Results
The winners of the DH Awards 2016 are as follows. Once ‘accidental’ (and not so accidental) duplicates of the 1726 ballots were removed there were 1652  ballots cast by members of the public over two weeks voting for one or more of the categories. Sorry if your favoured resource did not win — open public votes are popularity contests not necessarily a measure of worth and some of the resources campaigned more successfully than the others. Since this is a DH awareness activity, if lots of people saw your favoured resource, then we all win.
