The sites documented in the Archaeological Survey of Israel are published on the website where they are displayed in survey squares of 100 sq km (10 × 10 km). The list of maps is presented below in alphabetic order, according to their names and numbers as recorded in Yalquṭ Ha-Pirsumim. The survey maps can be seen on the right side of the screen against the background of an aerial photograph. The sites (marked with yellow dots) can be accessed by zooming in on the screen and a description of them will appear by clicking on the dots. The introduction to each map and search options are also displayed.

The Digital Mishnah Project will provide users with a database of digitized manuscripts of the Mishnah from around the world, along with tools for collation, comparison, and analysis. This demo provides fully marked up transcriptions of several major witnesses of tractate Neziqin (Bava Qamma, Bava Metsi'a, and Bava Batra), and illustrates basic functionalities. In addition the transcribed witnesses include several Genizah fragments, with an emphasis on those fragments that join other fragments to make up larger manuscripts

Manuscript witnesses are referred to by the catalog number in the Sussmann Thesaurus (S+0+Sussmann no.). Printed editions are provisionally given serial numbers.

Last update: 7/17/2014.
The browse function presents metadata and a rendering of the transcription that which can be viewed with their metadata and approximately as laid out in the original text.

The compare function allows for the detailed comparison of witnesses. At its core it runs a set of texts through CollateX, which aligns matching words ("tokens"). The Digital Mishnah site remerges this output with the original textual data and represents the results both as an alignment table, and as a text with critical apparatus. The user can determine the passage, the witnesses, and the order. Because we anticipate that a number of users will prefer a parallel-column ("synoptic") presentation, the collate page shows an arrangement of the selected passage arranged in parallel columns by witness in the user-specified order. Note: The previous version of this set of functions is at collate

Public Monuments in Roman Greece
http://romangreece.classics.ox.ac.uk/resources/banner1.jpg
The database is intended as a fully searchable catalogue of monuments known to have stood in the public spaces of cities in Greece from the time that Rome began to expand its influence into the Greek world (c.200 BC) to the height of the Roman Empire (c.200 AD). Monuments that were set up before that time and which are known to have still been standing are included as are monuments that are attested as being set up during that period. Initially the database will focus on three main case studies– Athens, Messene and Corinth but includes some monuments from outside those cities, which have been encountered while working through the primary and secondary literature. The database is a work in progress. For a summary of what is currently included see below. Feedback on the project as a whole or on individual database entries would be most welcome. Ancient European Languages And Writings
Ancient European languages and writings (AELAW)
AELAW has been developed with the aim of co-ordinating a wide group of international researchers dedicated to the study of the different ancient European languages and writings with the objective of creating an ample work team capable of establishing the foundations for the creation, for the first time, of a large online databank which will permit the cataloguing of all the currently known documents in this type of languages, thus introducing this important part of the European cultural heritage into the 21st century.

The construction of the Roman Empire generated a complex dialectic between local and global tendencies which presents more than a few points of contact with the world today. In the field of languages and written culture it supposed, on one hand, the affirmation of a society with an elevated literacy rate, a noteworthy literary culture and a growing use of public writing as an instrument of communications, social affirmation and commemoration; and, on the other, a long process of coexistence between languages of general use (Latin and Greek) and many other local ones which gave rise to phenomena of bilingualism and multilingualism in a context in which the language did not play the identifying role it has developed in the Europe of nations. The result of this coexistence in western Europe was the triumph of the Latin language and alphabet with varied results for the local languages: in some cases extinct at the begininning of our Era (Etruscan or Iberian) and in other cases conserved until the end of the Ancient period (Gallic or Punic) or, exceptionally until today (Basque).

ARCHEOSTORIE. Journal of Public Archaeologyis the open access peer-reviewed scientific journal that provides Italy with an arena to discuss issues such as the management and communication of archaeological heritage and, more widely, the role of archaeology into contemporary society. It produces insightful analyses on significant initiatives aimed at involving the public in archaeological and heritage issues, and bridging the gap between our past and modernity.

Despite the continuing growth of Public Archaeology as a field of studies, the Italian interpretation of the subject is still heavily under-investigated.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The first issue of Archeostorie will be presented in November 2016.
We invite whoever is interested in Public Archaeology issues to submit papers on any topic concerned with the relationship between archaeology and the wider world, as well as papers related to our Topic of the year.

Our choice for 2016 is "small but kind of mighty"...

CREWS Project: Contexts of and Relations between Early Writing Systems

CREWS 8 cropped
Contexts of and Relations between Early Writing Systems (CREWS) is a European Research Council funded project hosted at the Faculty of Classics, Cambridge.

The aim of the CREWS project is to take an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to the history of writing, developing new methodologies for studying writing systems and their social context. The project researchers will be working on specific case studies relating to inscriptions of the ancient Aegean, Eastern Mediterranean and Levant (c.2000-600 BC). By looking at the ways in which writing systems were developed and used, we can study not only the systems themselves and the languages written in them, but also the cultural settings in which they were adapted and maintained.

By focusing on the Mediterranean in 2nd and 1st millennia BC, the project will be able to investigate writing during a period when we know there were high levels of contact between different areas. Against this backdrop of linguistic and cultural interconnections, a study of how writing was passed on and adapted for new uses has the potential to give new insights into social history. Writing is more than just a vessel for recording language: it is a tool that is shaped by and contributes to the society in which it exists.

For an introduction to the concepts underpinning the project see the welcome post here.

O Lokalitetu
Roman town Doclea is the most significant ancient locality in Montenegro. It is 4 km far away from Podgorica, up the river Moraca. It was situated on the wide flat plateau between the rivers Zeta, Moraca and Siralija Creek.

The strategic position was the main reason why the town was built at this specific place. The space bordered by three river basins was unapproachable during almost the whole year because high water level, and protected by upright cliffs and very easy to defend. Although it was defended by nature and protected by rivers, it was fortified by mighty walls, towers and bastions which surrounded plateau on which the town was situated.

If a City is Set on a Height. The Akkadian omen series šumma ālu ina mēlê šakin
Sally Freedman
I started working on the Šumma Alu omens as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. My dissertation was a general overview of the series, and I completed text editions of Tablets 1-40 in If a City Is Set on a Height: The Akkadian Omen Series Šumma Alu ina Mele Šakin, volumes 1 and 2, published by the University of Pennsylvania Museum (1998 and 2006).
It is uncertain whether further volumes will appear in a conventional book format. However, I am posting text editions of the reconstructed Tablets on academia.edu, so that the work I’ve done on the remaining Alu Tablets will be available for anyone who is interested. Images of almost all the original texts are online, either on the British Museum website or in the database CDLI (Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative).

On-line Geographical Information System for the Theban Necropolis (OLGIS-TN)
    http://prosper.cofc.edu/~olgis/qurnagrid3.gif
The Theban Necropolis Geological Mapping Project of the University of Charleston and the Serapis Research Institute announces the creation of the On-line Geographical Information System for the Theban Necropolis (OLGIS-TN), a pilot project sponsored, in part, by the College of Charleston Santee-Cooper Geographic Information Systems Laboratory. It functions as an Internet clearing house to which scholars of the Theban necropolis can retrieve and contribute relevant data related to the cemeteries of ancient Thebes (located on the West Bank of modern Luxor, Egypt).
Until now, no single real-time tool has existed for Egyptologists and scientists to store, retrieve, and manipulate complex data of various types related to the necropolis of private tombs in Western Thebes. However, recent advances in both Internet technology and geographic information systems (GIS) have led to the development of map-driven Web sites for accessing spatial, textual and image databases. The Theban Necropolis Geological Mapping Project freely provides this Web-based GIS-driven archaeological information management tool specifically for the Theban private necropolis. Although the coverage area will ultimately extend from Dra Abu'l Naga on the north to Medinet Habu on the south, at the beginning, the system will concentrate only on the hill of Sheikh Abd el-Qurnah.
This information system acts as both a portal to data and a repository to facilitate the exchange of information among institutions and across disciplines. A map interface based on ultra-high resolution satellite imagery and Survey of Egypt topographical maps connects users with archaeological, cultural, historical, geological, and geographical data.

All issues are published online 20 months after print publication.

Fragments: Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Study of Ancient & Medieval PastsOnline ISSN: 2161-8585
The editorial board is pleased to announce the establishment of Fragments, a new, open-access and peer-reviewed journal, which will be published by MPublishing, a division of the University of Michigan Library. The journal's first articles were published in July 2011.

Fragments will provide a forum for dialogue and exchange between scholars in all fields of the humanities and social sciences who study the premodern world. The journal encourages scholars to pursue subjects of broad interest to colleagues working in other places and times, and to pursue comparative and connective approaches in investigating the past. The editors also invite scholars to explore interdisciplinary approaches, such as those that synthesize the insights of textual scholarship and archaeology, or history and sociology. We also welcome articles that introduce methodologically innovative approaches to the shared challenges of interpreting and understanding bodies of premodern evidence that are distinct in kind and quantity from the evidence of the more recent past. The broadest aim of Fragments is to transcend fragmentation: to foster research that overflows the boundaries of various well-established and vital traditions in order to generate new, integrated ways of thinking about the premodern past.

In order to foster dialogue, the editorial board will commission three published commentaries from scholars working outside of the author's field. The commentaries will seek to expand the scope and import of the article by introducing perspectives from other subfields and disciplines.

Fragments is published exclusively online. The electronic text is prepared by MPublishing, while the PDF downloads are typeset by the Philosophy Documentation Center.

Papers from the Institute of Archaeology (PIA) is a peer reviewed, open access journal that publishes research on all aspects of archaeology, museum studies, cultural heritage and conservation. Run by graduate students at the UCL Institute of Archaeology, the aim of PIA is to provide authors with experience in publishing articles early in their careers. We therefore place extra emphasis on the provision of peer review feedback and editorial assistance.

The PIA Forum and Interview sections also provide valuable insights from established scholars.
