Coptic SCRIPTORIUM (Sahidic Corpus Research: Internet Platform for Interdisciplinary multilayer Methods) is a collaborative, digital project created by Caroline T. Schroeder (University of the Pacific) and Amir Zeldes (Georgetown University). The team is constantly growing.
Coptic SCRIPTORIUM provides a platform for interdisciplinary and computational research in texts in the Coptic language, particularly the Sahidic dialect.  As an open-source, open-access initiative, the SCRIPTORIUM technologies and corpus function as a collaborative environment for digital research by any scholars working in Coptic. It provides:
  • tools to process Coptic texts
  • a searchable, richly-annotated corpus of texts using the ANNIS search and visualization architecture
  • visualizations of Coptic texts
  • a collaborative platform for scholars to use and contribute to the project
  • research results generated from the tools and corpus
We hope SCRIPTORIUM will serve as a model for future digital humanities projects utilizing historical corpora or corpora in languages outside of the Indo-European and Semitic language families.

Now Available Online – Der Begriff τέχνη bei Plato

Jeffre-cover
Der Begriff τέχνη bei Plato, by Friedrich Bernhard Jeffré The CHS is pleased to announce the first ever publication of Friedrich Bernhard Jeffré’s 1920 dissertation Der Begriff τέχνη bei Plato. This text offers an in-depth and enlightening analysis of the concept of τέχνη in Plato. Jeffré’s thesis was approved for publication but only two pages were published in 1922. This text is an edited combination of two handwritten manuscripts: one held at the Berlin State Library and a later […] Read More…

Best of the Achaeans
The CHS is pleased to announce that The Best of the Achaeans: Concepts of the Hero in Archaic Greek Poetry by Gregory Nagy is now available online on the CHS website. Despite widespread interest in the Greek hero as a cult figure, little was written about the relationship between the cult practices and the portrayals of the hero in poetry. The first edition of The Best of the Achaeans bridged that gap, raising new questions […] Read More…

Now Available Online – Dialoguing in Late Antiquity

Cameron_Averil_cover
The Center for Hellenic Studies is pleased to announce that Dialoguing in Late Antiquity by Averil Cameron is now available online on the CHS website! Christians talked, debated, and wrote dialogues in late antiquity and on throughout Byzantium. Some were philosophical, others more literary, theological, or Platonic; Aristotle also came into the picture as time went on. Sometimes the written works claim to be records of actual public debates, and we know that many such debates did take place and continued […] Read More…

New CHS Publication – Plato’s Wayward Path: Literary Form and the Republic

Schur_Plato's Wayward Path
The Center for Hellenic Studies is pleased to announce the publication of Plato’s Wayward Path: Literary Form and the Republic by David Schur through Harvard University Press. Since Friedrich Schleiermacher’s work in the 1800s, scholars interested in the literary dimension of Plato’s writings have sought to reconcile the dialogue form with the expository imperative of philosophical argument. It is now common for mainstream classicists and philosophers to attribute vital importance to literary form in Plato, which they often explain in terms […] Read More…

Now Available Online – The Singer of Tales

SingerOfTalesCover
The Center for Hellenic Studies is pleased to announce that The Singer of Tales by Albert B. Lord is now available online, for free, in an electronic form, on the newly redesigned CHS website. Albert Lord’s book builds on Milman Parry’s work in his search of the oral traditions in the Yugoslavia of 1933–35. Parry began recording and studying a live tradition of oral narrative poetry to further understand how Homeric poetry had been composed at the start […] Read More…

Digital Commons Network
http://assets.bepress.com/20140924/img/dcn/DCsunburst.png
The Digital Commons Network provides free access to full-text scholarly articles and other research from hundreds of universities and colleges worldwide. Curated by university librarians and their supporting institutions, this dynamic research tool includes peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, dissertations, working papers, conference proceedings, and other original scholarly work.

Clicking "Explore" anywhere on the multicolored Discipline Wheel opens a Commons page for a particular academic discipline. From here, you may browse popular and recently added articles, search all content, or "Follow" authors and publications to receive monthly email updates on new work in that field. You'll never run into pay walls or empty records, because only full-text, open-access research and scholarship are included in the Network.

The Digital Commons Network continues to grow thanks to the contributions of researchers, librarians, faculty, and students who believe that scholarship is a community enterprise. To learn more about the Digital Commons Network, see the Library Journal article, "Uncommonly Open: The New Digital Commons Network."

Histos: The On-line Journal of Ancient Historiography
http://research.ncl.ac.uk/histos/element_HistosLogo.gif
Histos, the on-line journal of ancient historiography, was founded in 1996 by John Moles, then of the University of Durham, who was also its Editor, supported by an Editorial Board of scholars from the UK and North America. Four issues appeared from 1997 to 2000, and many of the articles that appeared during those years have since become standard works in the study of ancient historiography. The website for Histos was hosted by the University of Durham from 1996 to 2011.

In 2010 a decision was made to re-start Histos, under the editorship of John Moles, now of the University of Newcastle, and with the addition of John Marincola, of Florida State University, as co-editor. The new site, now hosted by the University of Newcastle, was launched in June 2011, and the earlier material from volumes 1 to 4 was transferred to the new site, the older contributions having been converted from HTML format to PDF.

The brief of HISTOS is rapid publication of high-quality articles and notes on all aspects of ancient historiography and biography (including Jewish historiography, the Gospels and later Christian material) and of in-depth reviews of recent publications in the field. It is not our intention to publish material which is per se historical, unless it illuminates the qualities of ancient historians or biographers (this will be a matter of balance and judgment). All submissions will be anonymously refereed by experts. We aim for a turn-around time of a maximum of three months. We will publish in English, French, German and Italian.

HISTOS will be available both online, in a full open-access version (in PDF form), and in a printed version. All the papers accepted for publication will appear in both formats. Readers' responses are welcomed.

Albright News

The W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research (AIAR), founded in 1900, as the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem, provides a base for a broad range of American-led scholarly research projects in Near Eastern studies from prehistory to the early Islamic period in the Middle East.  Located in an historic building in Jerusalem, the Albright offers fellowships for doctoral and post-doctoral studies, and maintains residential and research facilities for its fellows, including an extensive library.  The Institute fosters North American participation in, and provides support for, archaeological excavations and surveys; promotes working relationships with related institutions in Jerusalem and the neighboring communities.
The mission of the Albright is to develop and disseminate scholarly knowledge of the literature, history, and culture of the Near East, as well as the study of the development of civilization from prehistory to the early Islamic period.

The Xia Nai Index of Egyptian Beads in The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology
http://digitool-b.lib.ucl.ac.uk:8881/exlibris/dtl/u3_1/dtle/www_r_eng/icon/xianai-large.jpg
There are some 3000 strings of beads in the Petrie Museum. These formed the subject of a dissertation in the 1940s by Xia Nai, one of China's leading archaeologists and pioneers after the founding of the People's Republic in 1949. Xia Nai's dissertation was only published in 2014 and to ensure that the research that underpinned this was also available, scans of Xia Nai's 1760 index cards held in the Petrie Museum archives were made.

You can read more about the bead index in a piece from curator Kristin A. Phelps, or read curator Stephen Quirke's short biography of Xia Nai.

Shuoting Zhang and Daniel Takacs have produced a concordance of Xia Nai and UC numbers

We are very grateful to the staff, volunteers and students who have contributed to making the Xia Nai archive resource publically available: Sam Washington, Daniel Takacs, Kristin Phelps, Shuoting Zhang and Marwa Helmy.
