Journal of the British Academy
The new online open-access Journal of the British Academy seeks to publish a conspectus of the state of scholarship across the British Academy’s disciplinary interests, its content derived from the Academy’s own lecture programme.

British Academy lectures

For over 100 years, the British Academy has held public lectures which are both of significance to specialists, and accessible to scholars in different disciplines and to a broader intelligent public. The lectures cumulatively form a unique record of scholarship in the humanities and social sciences.
Following a major review, the subject coverage of the British Academy's lecture programme has been extended - a list of the various series of lectures contributing to the Journal can be found here.

Publication

To provide wide access to the outputs of this renewed lecture programme, the British Academy is now launching this online Journal of the British Academy.
Articles will be published on this Journal website as downloadable PDF files. Each article will be posted once it is ready for publication. In some instances, a video or audio recording may stand as an alternative ‘record’ of a lecture.
Each 'volume' of the Journal will be composed of articles that have been posted to the Journal in the course of a calendar year.
(Lectures given up to 2011 have traditionally been published in the Proceedings of the British Academy series).

619 volumes: High-quality OCR of polytonic, or 'ancient', Greek

Lace: Greek OCR

Overview

This site catalogues the results of our 2012/13 campaign to produce high-quality OCR of polytonic, or 'ancient', Greek texts in a HPC environment. It comprises over 600 volumes from archive.org and from original scans. There are over 6 million pages of OCR output in total, including experimental and rejected results.
Results are presented in a hierarchical organization, beginning with the archive.org volume identifier. Each of these are associated with one or more 'runs', or attempts at OCRing this volume. A run has a date stamp and is associated with a classifier and an aggregate best b-score (roughly indicating quality of Greek output.) Each run produces various kinds of output:
  1. raw hocr output: the data generated by our OCR process, usually with multiple copies for each page, rendered at a range of binarization thresholds
  2. selected hocr output: a filtered version of the data in (1), with each page image represented by a single, best, output page
  3. blended hocr output: the data in (2), but replaced with the corresponding words from the raw output in (1), should the selected page not comprise a dictionary word and one of the raw pages comprises one.
  4. selected hocr output spellchecked: the data in (3) processed through a weighted levenshtein distance spellchecking algorithm that is meant to correct simple OCR errors
  5. combined hocr output: where archive.org provides OCR output for Latin script (not Greek), this final step pieces together the data in (4) with archive's output, preferring archive's output where our output suggests that the data is Latin. If archive.org provides Greek output, this step is no different from (4)

Code

All code and classifiers for Rigaudon are posted in a github repository. This holds the modified Gamera source code, ancillary python scripts such as the spellcheck engine, and the bash scripts that coordinate the process in a HPC environment through Sun Grid Engine.
Details of its operation are outlined in a white paper.
Our July 2013 presentation at the London Digital Classicist seminar series is available online from the Institue of Classical Studies.

Beinecke Rare Books & Manuscript Library:  Papyrus Collection Database

The Collection

The Yale papyrus collection began in 1889 with a gift of papyri from W. M. F. Petrie's excavations at Hawara, the archeological site in Ancient Egypt. In the following decades, Yale received a number of papyri, many of them from the discoveries at Oxyrhynchus, the ancient city west of the Nile River, by two young British excavators, Bernard Grenfell and Arthur Hunt.

Yale's collection continued to grow through purchases in Egypt and in Europe from the 1930s through the 1960s, acquisitions made by Michael Rostovtzeff in the late 1920s and early 1930s, and important gifts from E. J. Beinecke and from H. P. Kraus. The papyri, in Greek, Latin, Demotic, Coptic, and Arabic, include private letters, official and religious documents, legal deeds and contracts, biblical texts, and literary works by known and unknown authors. Included in the collection but numbered separately are the papyri excavated at Dura-Europos, a Hellenistic, Parthian, and Roman city on the Euphrates River in southern Syria where extensive remains of civil and military archives were found in the 1930s.

The Beinecke continues to inventory, preserve, and digitize its papyrus holdings.

The CRANE Project: Computational Research on the Ancient Near East Project
http://www.crane.utoronto.ca/images/crane_header.jpg
Welcome to the website of the Computational Research on the Ancient Near East (CRANE) Project.  This interdisciplinary project is creating a framework for the integration and analysis of data from several archaeological projects investigating the ancient Near East, focusing initially on the Orontes River Watershed of southeast Turkey and northwest Syria.

Over a century and a half of archaeological research in the Near East has documented the emergence of the first sedentary communities, the origins of agriculture, the first state-level societies, and the first interregional commercial and political networks.  Yet its contribution to a deeper understanding of the long-term growth and development of human communities and their interaction with the natural environment has been hindered by the lack of an analytical framework that incorporates the full array of data produced by this uniquely rich cultural legacy.  The CRANE Project is building an international collaboration of researchers who will use these data to model and visualize the interplay of social, economic and environmental dynamics at various spatial and temporal scales in order to shed light on the rise and development of complex societies in this important region.  Our research will also provide insight into a number of pressing contemporary issues, including the ecological impact of human activities, the socioeconomic and political impact of climate change, the long-term health consequences of human dietary practices and subsistence strategies, and the role of cultural conflict in affecting social and political change.

This website provides information and news on the CRANE Project's objectives, sites, methods, and team of researchers, and will eventually serve as a portal to disseminate our data and research results.

The Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts (CSNTM): Manuscripts
The requirements that need to be satisfied for using these images in publication vary from manuscript to manuscript. Each possessing institute or individual has its own requirements. If you wish to publish any of these images, you will need to get permission from CSNTM first. We can then direct you to the contact person of the institute that owns the manuscript(s) for further instructions. CSNTM does not charge for the use of these images, though the institute that owns the manuscripts may. At minimum, CSNTM needs to be credited with the photographs and the possessing institute needs to be credited with ownership of the manuscript in all research for which these images are used. For more information about usage of manuscript images, contact info@csntm.org

In order to find your way through the images of manuscripts, you should download the scripture index for each manuscript (it's the first document on each manuscript's page). Only a few manuscripts currently have a scripture index, but more are coming.

The Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts (CSNTM) is continuing to grow its online resources. Today we are proud to announce that we now have images of 128 papyri manuscripts in our archives, 111 digital papyri manuscripts online, and 80 of these available publically (the remaining are available for private viewing only due to contractual arrangements). This includes the new high resolution images of the Chester Beatty Papryi!

Images of the Geneva Iliad have been Posted!
Images of the Geneva Iliad, which has undergone extensive restoration and digitization in a partnership between the E-Codices project of Switzerland and the Homer Multitext, have now been published. Here is an excerpt from the E-Codices press release:

The “Geneva Iliad” was most likely produced in Constantinople in the 13th century. The manuscript was purchased in the 16th century, probably in Venice, by Henri Estienne, who used this manuscript as a basis for his 1566 edition of the Iliad, which remained the standard edition into the 18th century. This manuscript is unique for numerous scholia, which are not found in any other similar manuscript.
The digital publication of this manuscript was requested in 2010 by the “Homer Multitext”, a project of the Center for Hellenic Studies at Harvard University, which uses digital techniques to facilitate research regarding the multiformity of the textual tradition in Homeric epics.
We are extremely excited to be able to start making use of these images within the Homer Mutlitext. The E-Codices Creative Commons non-commercial licensing on the images will allow to use these images for education and research. As with the other manuscripts we have brought together digitally within the project, we will now be able to compare the Geneva Iliad side by side along with other manuscripts, and will no doubt learn a great deal about how the manuscript was conceived and constructed, the information contained in the scholia, and the sources for its scholia.
This collaboration between the Mellon Foundation, the E-Codices Virtual Manuscript Library of Switzerland, and the Homer Multiext has been four years in the making. We are so grateful to the Bibliothèque de Genève for overseeing the restoration, digitization, and scholarship on the manuscript that allowed for publication of these images to happen. Stay tuned as we learn more about this remarkable manuscript with its unusual lay out and unique set of scholia.

Synallagma: Greek Contracts in Context [formerly titled: "Greek Law in Roman Times"]
Created by: Dr. Uri Yiftach Department of Classics, Hebrew University
http://hudd.huji.ac.il/images/glrt_background.jpg
Welcome to “Greek Law in Roman Times”. This computerized Databank provides electronic access to some 6000 legal documents from Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine times, mostly from Egypt.
These documents and their classifications provide invaluable information concerning the development of law and legal practices from the Ptolemaic to Byzantine period. It also provides information about social and economic issues, such as the value of land in ancient society, the extent of economic independence of women, the circulation of cash-money, how the parties’ age affected the nature and scope of their economic activity etc. GLRT enables users to pinpoint correlations between the various recorded factors. Thus it provides a critical and heretofore-absent tool that enables scholars to discern patterns among the wealth of documents.
The databank classifies each document by its date and provenance, structure, language and other details regarding the parties to the contract and the content of the transaction. The databank contains a link to the text as it appears in the “Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri” as well as to the “Heidelberger Gesamtverzeichnis”. The DDBDP text can be viewed in a small window to the right of the structural synopsis of the document (i.e., ”Clauses”) or as a separate window by following the direct link provided (‘Link to External Databanks’).

American Numismatic Society Digital Publications Project
http://numismatics.org/pmwiki/pub/skins/ans/ans.gif
(Please direct questions to Sebastian Heath, <heath @ numismatics.org>)The American Numismatic Society is developing an infrastructure for the digital publication of numismatic catalogs, exhibitions, articles, and other materials. As a general rule, this system will take advantage of existing standards and tools whenever possible. This means that texts will be encoded using the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and that the Text Encoding Initiative's (TEI) xml dtd's and schemas will be used where appropriate. Further information about the TEI is available at its web site. There are many good starting points for learning about xml, including www.xml.org and the much more technical World Wide Web consortium's xml site.
Current Initiatives
  • nomisma.org is an effort to provide stable digital surrogates (URIs) for well-known numismatic concepts.
  • Numismatic Literature: This is the on-line continuation of the Society's annual listing of numismatic titles. Bibliographic information is entered directly into xml files conforming to an ad-hoc dtd. These files are then rendered into html for delivery via the web and into xsl:fo for the production of pdf's that are then printed as soft-bound volumes.
  • "Drachmas, Doubloons, and Dollars: The History of Money": Was exhibited at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. All the text from the labels and panels has been collected into an XML document using an ad-hoc dtd. An automatically generated html version is available as part of the main ANS web-site:
    • HTML-formatted. (The case titles link into an online presentation of the gallery's content.)
  • Sylloge of the Islamic Glass Weights in the Gayer-Anderson Museum, Cairo: This USAID funded project is preparing a complete catalog of the stamped glass weights, vessel stamps and ring weights in the museum.
  • John H. Kroll and Sebastian Heath (2002), "The British Museum Lot of Silver from the Taranto 1911 Hoard (Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards [1973], no. 1874)": Presenting the uncoined silver from this hoard. The following versions are available:
  • Introduction to Numismatic Terms and Methods: This document is required reading for students in the ANS' summer seminar. Two versions are available:

National Treasures: Selected Artifacts from the Shelby White Leon Levy Center for National Treasures
http://www.antiquities.org.il/t/images/mainlogo-eng.gif

The National Treasures Department of the Israel Antiquities Authority is responsible for the housing, documentation and control of antiquities in Israel. The National Treasures' collections comprise hundreds of thousands of artifacts that range from prehistoric periods to the end of the Ottoman period. Most of the artifacts are housed and catalogued in the repositories of the Shelby White and Leon Levy Center for National Treasures, and approximately 50,000 artifacts are on loan at archaeological exhibitions in Israel and abroad.

This on-line site offers a selection of published artifacts from the collections of the National Treasures and is available for researchers, curators, students and the general public in Israel and abroad. This site is updated continuously, and new artifacts are added on a regular basis.

The artifacts on the site are arranged both chronologically (according to archaeological periods) and typologically (according to the type of artifact), allowing either a gradual guided entry through the main title pages to the artifact's information card, or directly to the artifact's information card using an advanced search box.

The artifact's information card presents detailed archaeological data about the selected artifact, including provenance, type, dimensions, material, site where discovered, dating and bibliography. In addition, hi-resolution images of on-line artifacts may be purchased on-line from the photographic archives of the Israel Antiquities Authority.

The Leipzig Open Fragmentary Texts Series (LOFTS)
The Humboldt Chair of Digital Humanities at the University of Leipzig is pleased to announce a new effort within the Open Philology Project: the Leipzig Open Fragmentary Texts Series (LOFTS). In the first phase of LOFTS we invite public discussion as we finalize the goals, technological methods and editorial practices.

LOFTS has been presented at the AIUCD 2013 Conference and will be discussed at the Digital Classics panel at the 2014 APA Annual Meeting and at the 2014 NEH Workshop “Publishing Text for a Digital Age”. A workshop at Leipzig in July 2014 (“Open Philology – Historical languages in an open, global society”) will finalize the details of LOFTS. This announcement provides an initial, high-level description of the plan for LOFTS and is intended to provoke open discussion before final decisions are made.

The Leipzig Open Fragmentary Texts Series is a new effort to establish open editions of ancient works that survive only through quotations and text re-uses in later texts (i.e., those pieces of information that humanists call “fragments”). In the field of textual evidence, fragments are not portions of an original larger whole, but the result of a work of interpretation conducted by scholars who extract and collect information pertaining to lost works embedded in other surviving texts. These fragments include a great variety of formats that range from verbatim quotations to vague allusions and translations, which are only a more or less shadowy image of the original according to their closer or further distance from a literal citation.

Print editions of fragmentary works include excerpts extracted from their contexts and from the textual data about those contexts. The result is that they produce annotated indices into the sources that they cite. Moreover, editions of fragmentary works are fundamentally hypertexts and the goal of this project is to produce a dynamic infrastructure for a full representation of relationships between sources, citations, and annotations about them. In a true digital edition, fragments are not only linked directly to the source text from which they are drawn, but can also be precisely aligned to multiple editions. Accordingly, digital fragments are contextualized annotations about reused authors and works. As new versions of (or scholarship on) the source text emerge in a standard, machine-actionable form, these new findings are automatically linked to the digital fragments.

As a first step within the Leipzig Open Fragmentary Texts Series (LOFTS), the Humboldt Chair announces the Digital Fragmenta Historicorum Graecorum (DFHG) Project, whose goal is to produce a digital edition of the five volumes of Karl Müller’s Fragmenta Historicorum Graecorum (FHG) (1841-1870), which is the first big collection of fragments of Greek historians ever realized.

Open Access to Classical Studies from The C.H. Beck catalogue
OpenEdition is pleased to announce the arrival of German publisher C.H. Beck on OpenEdition Books, the digital platform for open access academic publishing. C.H. Beck collections will be available on OpenEdition Books in April 2014.

The C.H. Beck catalogue on OpenEdition will initially include around 30 books drawn from its classical studies series (Zetemata: Monographien zur klassischen Altertumswissenschaft) and papyrus studies series (Münchener Beiträge zur Papyrusforschung und antiken Rechtsgeschichte). Two-thirds of the books will come from the classical studies series, which examines topics such as philology, history, epistemology and theology in the works of writers and philosophers of Ancient Greece and Rome. The papyrus studies series contributes to scholarship on the law, politics, economy and administration of ancient civilisations, notably the Ptolemaic and Hellenistic periods.

Most of the books will be available in Open Access Freemium: free HTML, with PDF, ePub and eReader formats available exclusively to subscribing institutions and through digital bookstores.

A Catalogue of Digital Editions

A Catalogue of Digital Editions
The present website showcases the research data collection work undertaken by PhD candidate Greta Franzini at the UCL Centre for Digital Humanities under the supervision of Dr Melissa Terras and Simon Mahony.
Greta is creating a digital edition of the oldest surviving manuscript of S.Augustine's De Civitate Dei. Before doing so, her research seeks to examine best practice in the field of digital editions by collating relevant evidence in a detailed catalogue of extant electronic text projects. The catalogue records features, scope, philological as well as technological aspects of each edition and is exhibited here in its embryonic form with the intention of becoming a collaborative endeavour for the benefit of the Digital Humanities community.
Lists of digital editions already exist and have been around for many years. None, however, record project features, nor do they provide an easy means of browsing, viewing and downloading the data. Greta's catalogue fills that gap as it not only provides an up-to-date record of what is currently available but breaks projects down into their constituent parts for a detailed understanding of their build.

The catalogue is of great benefit as it provides:
  • an accessible, unique record of what has been used and tested in the past, what works and what does not;
  • an insight into past, present and future projects;
  • the possibility of viewing trends or patterns (e.g. what time periods are most covered or which institutions produce the largest number of digital editions);
  • a platform where collaborators can engage in live discussions and update information as it becomes available;
  • a means of identifying which areas need to be improved and flagging up broken links or errors.
While currently serving as a doctoral survey, the catalogue is being developed into a large resource. With this website, Greta hopes to encourage interested scholars to join the project as co-editors and, together, record extant electronic editions for the benefit of the Digital Humanities community.
