Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica : Natural Sciences in Archaeology (IANSA)
ISSN: 1804-848X
http://www.iansa.eu/pics/logo.png
The focus of Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica – Natural Sciences in Archaeology is the ongoing cooperation of archaeology with the natural sciences and other disciplines. The journal’s interests include bioarcheaology (archaeobotany, archaeozoology, archaeogenetics and anthropology), geoarchaeology (petro-archeology, micromorphology) and dating methods in archaeology. We will publish contributions that aim to solve archaeological questions utilizing the methods of the natural sciences and other fields. The birth of IANSA reflects the growing need of scientists in central Europe to access an international journal focused on the methods of the natural sciences and multidisciplinary cooperation in archaeology. The growth of natural science methodologies within archaeology has been very dynamic. It is anticipated that our target group of readers will also grow in the coming years and, along with traditional archaeological institutions, will gradually include specialized natural science institutions (natural science departments associated with archaeology focused museums, specialized laboratories, etc.) in the Czech Republic and abroad. IANSA also aims to provide a niche for historical studies, particularly those that cooperate with the natural sciences and archaeology.

The journal is strictly scientific, peer reviewed, and publishes only in British English. Each article is reviewed by two specialists in fields related to the content of the article. Our goal is to establish IANSA as a high quality specialty periodical, cited by the international Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Report (JCR), and with a high level JCR “Impact Factor”. A hardcopy of the journal is issued semi-annually, on glossy paper, and with an initial circulation of 500 pieces.

Saxa Loquuntur: A Website on Greek and Latin epigraphy
This site brings together a number of resources that are available for the study of epigraphic texts. The site was designed for my own courses at the University of Groningen and at the Netherlands Institute at Athens The site will be based on two earlier documents that I have compiled, The Absolute Beginners’ Guide to Greek and Latin Epigraphy and Electronic Epigraphy, which found some readers over the web. The focus is on Greek inscriptions, but Latin texts are not excluded!

Enoch Seminar Online
http://www.enochseminar.org/drupal/sites/default/files/Enoch%20Seminar%20Website%20Logo_3.png
Founded in 2001, the Enoch Seminar is an academic group of international specialists in Second Temple Judaism and Christian Origins, who share the results of their research in the field and meet to discuss topics of common interest...

The Enoch Seminar Online is a new kind of website. It is both an archive of all papers presented at the meetings of the Enoch Seminar, and an online journal of news, reviews and other original contributions. The basic information is available to all readers, while more specialized material is accessible only to subscribers (Friends, Members, and Veterans of the Enoch Seminar).

The Enoch Seminar focuses on the period of Jewish history, culture and literature from the Babylonian Exile to the Bar-Kochba revolt—the period in which both Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism have their roots. The goal is to tear down the misleading walls of separation that still divide this field of research, recovering the unity and integrity of the period. Enoch is the symbol of this inter-canonical and inter-disciplinary effort, as he is present in each and all of the canons that anachronistically divide sources from the period: Old Testament, Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish-Hellenistic literature, New Testament, Apostolic Fathers, etc.

Directory of Open access Books (DOAB)

Official launch of the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB)

The Directory of Open Access books was officially launched on 1 July 2013 at the Open Access Monographs in the Humanities and Social Sciences Conference, The British Library, London.

At the launch, Bas Savenije, Director General of the Dutch National Library and Chairman of the Board of OAPEN Foundation, introduced OAPEN and the reasons to develop the Directory of Open Access Books (view presentation).

Eelco Ferwerda, Director of OAPEN, discussed the development of DOAB since the launch of the beta version in 2012 and outlined its goals: to promote OA book publishing, by increasing the discoverability of OA books, by supporting quality assurance and standards, and by providing an authoritative list of OA book publishers. Ferwerda mentioned the Directory of Open Access Journals as an important example for DOAB. He expects DOAB will need to regularly refine its selection criteria, just as DOAJ is currently doing. He also announced that DOAB will follow DOAJ’s approach to sustain its activities through financial support from the stakeholder community.

DOAB currently lists over 1450 OA books from 49 publishers and more publishers are will be added shortly (view presentation).

DOAB is sponsored by Brill and SpringerOpen. Veronika Spinka, SpringerOpen Books Manager, remarked that “DOAB is already a successful established tool in the scientific community”. “We believe that some form of certification is always needed”, said Sam Bruinsma, Brill’s Vice President Business Development, ”to make sure that Open Access book publishing will succeed”.

The full video of the launch can be found here.

http://www.pretres-civiques.org/sites/default/files/priests_logo.gif

The digital format publication allows to draw attention to those contributions which are often waiting for suitable editorial spaces, due to their peculiar wealth of data and documentation. The journal aims to become an a platform for data-sharing and discussions on the analysis and interpretations of prehistoric contexts, research methods, and economic and social transformations of prehistory.

Fragments: Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Study of Ancient & Medieval Pasts
The editorial board is pleased to announce the establishment of Fragments, a new, open-access and peer-reviewed journal, which will be published by MPublishing, a division of the University of Michigan Library. The journal's first articles were published in July 2011.

Fragments will provide a forum for dialogue and exchange between scholars in all fields of the humanities and social sciences who study the premodern world. The journal encourages scholars to pursue subjects of broad interest to colleagues working in other places and times, and to pursue comparative and connective approaches in investigating the past. The editors also invite scholars to explore interdisciplinary approaches, such as those that synthesize the insights of textual scholarship and archaeology, or history and sociology. We also welcome articles that introduce methodologically innovative approaches to the shared challenges of interpreting and understanding bodies of premodern evidence that are distinct in kind and quantity from the evidence of the more recent past. The broadest aim of Fragments is to transcend fragmentation: to foster research that overflows the boundaries of various well-established and vital traditions in order to generate new, integrated ways of thinking about the premodern past.

In order to foster dialogue, the editorial board will commission three published commentaries from scholars working outside of the author's field. The commentaries will seek to expand the scope and import of the article by introducing perspectives from other subfields and disciplines.

Fragments is published exclusively online. The electronic text is prepared by MPublishing, while the PDF downloads are typeset by the Philosophy Documentation Center.

Glossarium Græco-Arabicum: A lexicon of the mediæval Arabic translations from the Greek

The database Glossarium Græco-Arabicum makes available the files of a lexical project, intended to open up the lexicon of the mediæval Arabic translations from the Greek. It contains images of the filecards (ca. 80,000) which have not yet been published in the analytical reference dictionary A Greek and Arabic Lexicon (Leiden: Brill, 1992ff.), and comprises Arabic roots from the letter jîm to the end of the Arabic alphabet. The database provides search facilities for Greek words, Arabic words and roots, as well as the authors and titles of the source texts.

From the eighth to the tenth century A. D., Greek scientific and philosophical works were translated wholesale into Arabic. This activity resulted in the incorporation and reorganization of the classical heritage in the new civilization which, using Arabic, spread with Islam.

The object of project Glossarium Graeco-Arabicum is to make readily available to scholars the direct information which the Graeco-Arabic translations contain for several areas of research. These include:

– the vocabulary and syntax of Classical and Middle Arabic;
– the development of a scientific and technical vocabulary in Arabic;
– the vocabulary of Classical and Middle Greek;
– the chronology and nature of the translation movement into Arabic; and
– the establishment of the texts of Greek works and their Arabic translations.

This is the homepage of the Archimedes Project at Harvard University.
The Archimedes Project aims to develop model interactive environments for scholarly research on the history of mechanics and engineering from antiquity to the Renaissance. It is designed to integrate research and knowledge dissemination in new ways and to serve as a proof-of-concept project for open digital libraries on topics in the history of science. The project is funded by the Digital Libraries Initiative Phase 2 program of the National Science Foundation and is a joint endeavor of the Department of the Classics at Harvard University and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) in Berlin, Germany. Numerous treatises on mechanics as well as other forms of documentation of mechanical knowledge and practices constitute the project corpus. Ongoing research at Harvard University and the MPIWG on the long-term development of mechanical knowledge and its manifestation in technical terminology and the inferences of practitioners, engineers, and scientists plays an important role in the testbed design. The project demands powerful, linguistically based information technology for handling the variety of languages occurring in the source materials. Source documents are being prepared with tools such as automatic morphological analysis of Latin, Greek, Italian, and Arabic, as well as the automatic linking of sources to modern and historical dictionaries and reference works.

In July 2007, The Getty Foundation awarded a generous grant to the British School at Rome Archive to support the arrangement and description of part of the John Bryan Ward-Perkins photographic collection. As a result of this 2-year project, this website (www.bsrdigitalcollections.it) of the BSR digital collections was created to present not only the photographic material (Photographs) but also other types of resources which follow into different categories: Maps, Prints, Documents, Postcards, Drawings, Paintings and Manuscripts. The majority of the digital images displayed on this website are represented by the photographs catalogued during the second Getty Foundation funded project (2007-2009).
• In May 2013 the following new collections were added:

- 409 photographs of aqueducts in Lazio from the Thomas Ashby Collection published in I giganti dell’acqua, 2007
- a selection of photographs from the John Henry Parker Collection
- 56 photographs from the Robert Gardner Collection

OIS 9.  Heaven on Earth: Temples, Ritual, and Cosmic Symbolism in the Ancient World
Edited by Deena Ragavan

Oriental Institute Seminars 9

The volume is the result of the eighth Annual University of Chicago Oriental Institute Seminar, held on March 2-3, 2012. Seventeen speakers, from both the US and abroad, examined the interconnections between temples, ritual, and cosmology from a variety of regional specializations and theoretical perspectives. The seminar revisited a classic topic, one with a long history among scholars of the ancient world: the cosmic symbolism of sacred architecture. Archaeologists, art historians, and philologists working not only in the ancient Near East, but also Mesoamerica, Greece, South Asia, and China, re-evaluated the significance of this topic across the ancient world.
