The Leverhulme International Network Project for the Study of Dispersed Qumran Cave Artefacts and Archival Sources
In the Qumran caves that yielded the Dead Sea Scrolls many jars, lids and other artefacts were discovered by local Bedouin and also in joint Jordanian, French and American excavations (1949-56). Some of these material artefacts were sent to collections worldwide very early on, either gifted or sold. Recently the École Biblique et Archéologique Française of Jerusalem and the ISCAB Lugano started a program for the final report on the Caves of the Qumran Area, dealing mainly with the materials kept in Jerusalem and Amman. The program is directed by Pere Jean-Baptiste Humbert (EBAF) and Marcello Fidanzio (ISCAB). The network for the Dispersed Qumran Caves Artefacts and Archival Sources hopes to  engage with this publication project, by facilitating the study of all the dispersed artefacts enabling more comprehensive new reports. This will provide more information about the Qumran cave artefacts, and contribute to reconstructing a material profile of each cave’s contents. Alongside the analysis of ceramic jars, lids, textiles, leathers and wooden remains, the network will additionally explore the written and photographic dossiers of archaeologists and visitors.

The Illegal Excavation and Trade of Syrian Cultural Objects: A View from the Ground
Pages 74-84 | Published online: 13 Dec 2017

Journal of Field Archaeology

Volume 43, 2018 - Issue 1

The illegal excavation and trade of cultural objects from Syrian archaeological sites worsened markedly after the outbreak of civil disturbance and conflict in 2011. Since then, the damage to archaeological heritage has been well documented, and the issue of terrorist funding explored, but hardly any research has been conducted into the organization and operation of theft and trafficking of cultural objects inside Syria. As a first step in that direction, this paper presents texts of interviews with seven people resident in Syria who have first-hand knowledge of the trade, and uses information they provided to suggest a model of socioeconomic organization of the Syrian war economy regarding the trafficking of cultural objects. It highlights the importance of coins and other small objects for trade, and concludes by considering what lessons might be drawn from this model to improve presently established public policy.

The present volume is the first in a series of monographs dedicated to the results achieved by AcrossBorders, a European Research Council Project (Austrian Academy of Sciences and Ludwig Maximilian University Munich). With its so-called Egyptian temple town and adjacent pyramid cemeteries, Sai Island is one of the prime examples for settlement policy of New Kingdom Egypt (c. 1530-1070 BC) in Upper Nubia (northern Sudan) and is the focus of this project. New fieldwork and multi-layered research conducted by the AcrossBorders project has provided fresh insights on living conditions in New Kingdom Nubia in direct comparison with Egypt. This volume is dedicated to SAV1 North, the sector situated along the northern enclosure wall. It was excavated between 2008 and 2012 by the Sai Island Archaeological Mission and processed within the framework of AcrossBorders. The principal focus of the book is the physical remains of SAV1 North: the architecture and material culture, with emphasis on the pottery and small finds. Datable to the mid to late 18th Dynasty, the building phase labelled as Level 3 was the heyday of sector SAV1 North – a time well-attested by several architectural remains with associated finds and pottery, which are all presented in the volume. A summary of thoughts on possible hints about the lifestyle and activities at SAV1 North preserved in the material remains completes AcrossBorders I. All in all, the evidence from SAV1 North underlines the important role Sai plays in understanding settlement patterns in New Kingdom Nubia.

Ride: A review journal for digital editions and resources
ISSN: 2363-4952
http://ride.i-d-e.de/wp-content/uploads/logo-ide-crop1.png
RIDE is a review journal dedicated to digital editions and resources. RIDE aims to direct attention to digital editions and to provide a forum in which expert peers criticise and discuss the efforts of digital editors in order to improve current practices and advance future developments. It will do so by asking its reviewers to pay attention not only to the traditional virtues and vices of any edition, but also to the progressing methodology and its technical implications. Read more about RIDE in our editorial.

      Preserving the Cultural Heritage of Afghanistan
      Edited by Gil J. Stein, Michael T. Fisher, Abdul Hafiz Latify, Najibullah Popal, and Nancy Hatch Dupree

      The University of Chicago, the US Embassy Kabul, the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University, and the Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture organized an international conference focused on “Preserving the Cultural Heritage of Afghanistan” (PCHA), held in Kabul from November 9 to 11, 2014. This volume comprises the revised and edited papers and summaries of the panel discussions held at the conference. We are pleased to present the conference proceedings in bilingual format — Dari and English — for maximum accessibility by international readers. Afghanistan has been called the “crossroads of Asia,” but perhaps this title is an over-simplification. Relegating Afghan's landscape to a thoroughfare fails to capture Afghanistan’s pivotal, active role in the emergence of new cultural forms and dynamics of interaction with its neighbors in Central Asia, Iran, South Asia, and China.

      Library of Antiquity on Perseus

      Perseus 5.0 Launching March 15!
      As many of you no doubt have heard, the Perseus Project is getting an exciting new overhaul. Eldarion, a web development company in the US headed by a classicist/developer J.K. Tauber, will be releasing Perseus 5.0 on March 15. We’ve covered the Perseus Project in depth before in a four-part post series (links below). In honor of the coming update, we thought we’d revisit the Perseus Project and talk a little more about the project and its various forms.
      Our four-post series covered Perseus 4.0,  or the Perseus Hopper, which is the Perseus Project mirror hosted by Tufts University.  Here are the links to those four posts:
      The Perseus Hopper is software that was built to interact with the digitized primary sources and reference tools that make up the collections of the Perseus Digital Library. Both the complete texts and the code for the Perseus Hopper are open source.
      But the Perseus Hopper is just one Perseus Project Mirror. There are two other mirror sites that also host the Perseus Digital Library. Traditionally, a mirror site is an exact copy of a website running on a completely different server that can be accessed as a backup if the main site is down or that visitors can be diverted to if the main site is receiving too many visitors. In the case of the Perseus mirror hosted out of the University of Chicago, AKA Perseus under PhiloLogic, the texts from the Perseus Digital Library are mirrored but the software that interacts with that library is slightly different. The Chicago mirror of the Perseus Digital Library runs on Logeion (but much, much, more about that in a future post!). As of the time of this blog post, the other Perseus mirror, the Berlin Mirror, is down.
      Back in the day when I was an undergraduate student in classics, the internet was slow. We used to download Perseus and run it on our own computers. We could do that because the Perseus digital library and code is open source. The download page has links to download the Hopper code and the complete texts. These days most of us have access to high-speed internet, and the Perseus Hopper is fast and has very little downtime, so there is less incentive to run local copies. But you could if you wanted to. It’s worth noting that since Perseus 5.0 is launching soon, the Perseus 4.0 Hopper code is no longer being supported.
      Perseus 5.0 will be known as the Scaife Reader, named after Ross Scaife who was a pioneer in Digital classics. Scaife was a professor at the University of Kentucky and founded the Stoa Consortium, an umbrella organization for digital classics that hosts projects like the Suda On Line. Scaife himself was a huge proponent of open source software. The Scaife Reader, like the Hopper before it, is open source and available on GitHub (GitHub is the most popular place these days to share open source code). You can follow the instructions in the readme.md file and have a local version of Perseus 5.0 running on your machine if you’d like (and you happen to know Python).
      In honor of the Perseus 5.0 launch, we’ll be taking an in-depth look at the Perseus Chicago Mirror and the new Scaife viewer once it’s online and ready to go. In the meantime, if you’re curious, head on over the GitHub and fork the project! Happy coding everyone. 🙂

      Africa Romana
      ISSN: 1828-3004
      Atti del XX Convegno
      Nel tentativo di incentivare gli studi sull'evo antico nell'Africa settentrionale il Centro di Studi interdisciplinari sulle Province Romane ha promosso l'edizione di una serie di volumi curati da autori italiani e maghrebini.
      Solo per restare all'ultimo decennio e senza contare gli innumerevoli articoli e le ormai decine di migliaia di pagine che raccolgono gli Atti del convegno L'Africa Romana, ricordiamo:
      • Uchi Maius, 1, Scavi e ricerche epigrafiche in Tunisia, a cura di A. Mastino e M. Khanoussi, 1997;
      • P. Ruggeri, Africa ipsa parens illa Sardiniae. Studi di storia antica e di epigrafia, 1999;
      • S. Aounallah, Le Cap Bon, jardin de Carthage. Recherches d'épigraphie et d'histoire romano-africaines (146 a.C.-235 p.C.), 2001;
      • P. Salama, Les bornes milliaires du territoire de Tipasa (Maurétanie Césarienne), 2002;
      • A. M. Corda (a cura di ), Uomo, Territorio, Ambiente. La cooperazione italo-tunisina nel settore archeologico, 2002;
      • M. Milanese (a cura di ), Uchi Maius tardo antica e islamica. Miscellanea di studi 1997/2002, 2003;
      • R. Zucca, Sufetes Africae et Sardiniae. Studi storici e geografici sul Mediterraneo antico, 2004;
      • A. Ibba, G. Traina, L'Afrique romaine de l'Atlantique à la Tripolitaine (69-439 ap. J.-C.), 2006;
      • A. Ibba (a cura di, con la collaborazione di M. Abid, Z. Benzina Ben Abdallah, C. Cazzona, D. Sanna, R. Sanna, E. Ughi, disegni di S. Ganga ), Uchi Maius, 2: Le iscrizioni, 2006.
      Conscio dell'importanza del libro con insostituibile strumento formativo primario, il Centro di Studi interdisciplinari sulle Province Romane ha sempre posto gratuitamente a disposizione di Università e Istituti di ricerca algerini, libici, marocchini e tunisini e di giovani studiosi meritevoli di attenzione, questi volumi, al fine di incentivare la ricerca scientifica e di agevolare la formazione di elementi validi ma economicamente svantaggiati.
