Antike Fundmünzen in Europa (AFE)

Münzteppich

Antike Fundmünzen in Europa: database (AFE-WEB)is a web-based database for recording and publishing coin finds developed by the Römisch-Germanische Kommission (RGK) des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts (DAI) together with the Department for Database and Information Systems (DBIS) at the Goethe University, Frankfurt/Main.

AFE-WEB employs the concepts of stable numismatic identifiers and linked open data methodologies established by the Nomisma.org project. By mapping the database to the Nomisma.org ontology, the data is made available via a D2R server and can be queried at a SPARQL endpoint. This approach also facilitates the logical integration of different databases.

Currently three instances of AFE-WEB are in operation:
AFE-RGK: As part of the project “Corpus der römischen Funde im europäischen Barbaricum”, the primary aim of AFE-RGK is to record finds of ancient coins from Germany outside the Roman Empire. The database also hosts data on recent coin finds from Hessen and Baden-Württemberg.

AFE-PL: Serves as the data repository for the project “Finds of Roman coins from Poland (FRC PL)”. The project, funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science of Poland, is dedicated to the registration finds of Roman coins in Poland and territories associated historically with Poland over the past 100 years.

AFE4HD: Serves as the data repository for the project “Der spätantike Münzhorizont in der Rhein-Neckar-Region – Dokumentation und historische Interpretation” at the University of Heidelberg, Germany financed by the Ministry for Science, Research and Culture of Baden-Württemberg.

Open Context Projects and Collections
Anyone can publish their research with Open Context — from individuals to teams, and from junior to senior scholars. Open Context focuses on structured data, meaning the records of spreadsheets or relational databases, together with related media files (such as images and maps). Essentially, we provide publication services for the vast bulk of media that typically cannot fit into a conventional book or article publication. In general, Open Context does not publish or archive PDFs of published or unpublished manuscripts, unless these help document structured datasets. Browse Open Context's projects for examples of the kinds of content we publish.

Open Context currently publishes 71 projects.

Open Access Monograph Series: Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum

Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum

The Original Project

Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum is the oldest research project of the Union Académique Internationale.

The first meeting to organise the project was held in Paris in 1919.

Edmond Pottier (1855 -1934) initiated it and produced the first fascicule for the Louvre in 1922.

Pottier's role in developing CVA is the subject of "A corpus of ancient vases"in Revue Archéolgique 2004.

Pottier had become a curator in the Louvre in 1884, two years before all of its ancient pottery was incorporated into the Department of Oriental Antiquities.

When the Louvre purchased several thousand ancient vases from the Campana Collection it became the largest collection of ancient pottery in the world. Many types were represented, for example Proto-Elamitic pottery which Pottier had been the first to publish in 1912.
Pottier's vision of the types of pottery in CVA was broad - all ancient pottery from Europe, the Mediterranean, the Near East and the Middle East.

Pottier's vision of publishing every example of so many different types of ancient pottery was ambitious and not easily realised.

In 1956 it was suggested that Greek and related wares only should be published; these now dominate CVA. By 2004 more than 300 fascicules have been published by more than 120 collections in 26 countries.

CVA Online

In 2000 the International Committee of CVA asked the Beazley Archive to prepare a feasibility study for the digitisation of out of print fascicules, approximately 250 for the web. Later that year the Union Académique Internationale formally invited the Beazley Archive to undertake the project.

In 2001 The Getty Grant Program awarded £75,000 for a three-year project to be carried out in Oxford.

The CVA project, to digitise these fascicules began in 2002 and ended in September 2004. The project is on-going; new fascicules are being published and participating museums have the opportunity to contribute to the on-line database.

ISSN: 2104-3817 (online)

    Ernst Herzfeld Squeeze Imaging Project
The Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery Archives (Freer|Sackler Archives) hold a significant collection of 393 squeezes from ancient archaeological sites in the Near East. A squeeze is a series of sheets of paper that are layered on top of each other and moistened to create a wet pulp. This substance is pressed upon the inscriptions, creating a paper mold and capturing the impressionistic writing for a 3-dimensional negative effect. (See the Squeeze Making tab for more information). The inscriptions typically contain information on the ancient culture's history, now preserved in the squeezes. As they are often made of paper, squeezes can be fragile, which limits their accessibility and jeopardizes the historical data they hold.

The squeezes in the Archives, Ernst Herzfeld papers date from 1911-1934. The squeezes range from very high-grade, robust paper to low-grade cigarette paper. Over time, the squeezes have been transported around the world, handled and stored in ways not approved by F|S archivists, and have suffered from various issues that affect all paper products. The squeezes contain Arabic script, Middle Persian, and Cuneiform impressions from archaeological sites: Bastam, Isfahan, Rayy, Samarra, Shiraz, Sunghur, Taq-i Bustan, Tus, Sarpul, Pasargadae, Persepolis, Naqsh-i Rustam, and Paikuli. The Herzfeld papers have been vital in the research of these sites, and the squeezes he created for temporary reference have helped scholars access information from monuments that for many reasons may no longer be available.

In 2010, the Freer|Sackler Archives received a grant from the Smithsonian Institution's Collections Care and Preservation Fund to aid in the preservation of the squeezes and the 3-D information they contain. The Archives collaborated with the Smithsonian Institution Museum Conservation Institute (MCI) to create a digital preservation surrogate for each squeeze, using a new imaging technique called Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI). Along with protecting the original objects from further damage, RTI allows the end user (you!) to manipulate the image and enhance the squeeze's readability. Scholars will be able to find intellectual and physical information that was previously not known to exist or had thought to have been lost. This will allow researchers to learn more from the digital images than they could from the physical object. The digital images will provide unparalleled access to histories, delivered from the cradle of civilization to the homes of scholars and enthusiasts alike.

Please read the Technical Note for more information on RTI technology and how to view the squeezes, as well as the Archival Note for further details on the project.

A foremost scholar in the field of Iranian studies, Ernst Herzfeld (1879–1948) explored all phases of Near Eastern culture from the prehistoric period to Islamic times. Housed in the F|S Archives, the Ernst Herzfeld papers document his archaeological activities in such sites as Samarra, Persepolis, Pasargadae, Paikuli, and Aleppo and include correspondence, field notebooks, drawings, sketchbooks, inventories of objects, photographs, and squeezes of architectural inscriptions and details.

Cataloging of the Ernst Herzfeld papers commenced in September 2009 and will continue through summer 2011. Click the links below to access different areas of the collection. Please be advised that some of the series may not yet have records or images; we are in the process of making them available.

Preservation, digitization, and cataloging have been made possible by the Leon Levy Foundation. Original cataloging and organization of the collection was undertaken by Joseph Upton.

    Restauro Archeologico
    ISSN 1724-9686 (print)
    ISSN 2465-2377 (online)
    http://www.fupress.net/public/journals/58/ra_banner.gif

Restauro Archeologico (RA) is a scientific international print and open access journal, issued every six months.

RA publishes articles peer-reviewed – in Italian, English, Spanish, French and German, sulla concerning the knowledge, conservation, and valorisation of all endangered, neglected, or ruined architectural structures and aims to focus attention on the methodologies of study and intervention on architectural heritage in archaeological contexts or connected to them (pluristratification).
The archaeological restoration may involve, for modes of intervention and enhancement purposes, in addition to the ancient heritage, even all the architectures that, due of their origin, conditions of use and maintenance are reduced to ruins; for instance, interventions could be undertaken on modern buildings that are abandoned or in a state of ruin, using procedures similar to those applied to ancient structures, with the primary purpose of maintaining memory: this is the case, for example, of industrial archaeology.

Therefore, the journal aims to be a privileged observation window of all possible conservative approaches depending on the geopolitical and cultural multiple contexts. With this in mind, ample space is given to multidisciplinary aspects inherent in the practice of restoration, with special attention to methodological and technical advances in the discipline.

    Ancient Narrative
    Online ISSN: 1568-3532
    Print ISSN:  1568-3540

     http://www.ancientnarrative.com/pics/logo.jpg
As the name Ancient Narrative indicates, the areas of interest of the new journal are: Greek, Roman, Jewish novelistic traditions, including novels proper, the "fringe", as well as the fragments; narrative texts of the Byzantine age, early Christian narrative texts - and the reception of these works in modern literature, film and music. Ancient Narrative encourages approaches which range from editorial and philological work on these texts, and literary-theoretical studies, to theological, sociological, cultural and anthropological approaches. No particular area or methodology is preferred. The audience of our journal will thus comprise not only those who are working mainly in classical or religious studies, but all those who are interested in the birth and development of narrative fiction in all its aspects, from antiquity to the modern times.

Ancient Narrative (AN) is first and foremost an electronic journal, in which selected articles will be discussed during a period of several months. At the end of the year the authors have the opportunity to revise their articles. A volume containing all revised articles of the past year will appear both in print and on the website.
AN also publishes special, theme-oriented issues. Your suggestions for such issues are very welcome.

AN is the electronic continuation of the Petronian Society Newsletter (ed. Gareth Schmeling) and the Groningen Colloquia on the Novel (eds. Heinz Hofmann and Maaike Zimmerman). Therefore, AN will, besides full articles, publish bibliographical information as well as brief notes on relevant subjects. The editors will also invite specialists for reviews, which will be published in the electronic journal and in the annual printed volume of AN.

Rasenna: Journal of the Center for Etruscan Studies
    ISSN: 1940-073X

The electronic journal Rasenna: Journal of the Center for Etruscan Studies is published under the auspices of the Classics Department and the Center for Etruscan Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The journal is an integral part of the Center’s mission to advance and promote research on the Etruscans and their civilization within the academic arena as well as to the general public.

Print publications devoted to research on the Etruscans are rare. Reliable electronic resources of a scholarly nature are virtually non-existent. The journal Rasenna provides free access to cutting-edge, peer-reviewed articles that address topics across a range of interdisciplinary perspectives. The journal also publishes substantive reviews of the latest books in the field and encourages scholarly responses to published articles.

The electronic medium affords publication opportunities that cannot be matched by print journals due to cost and formatting constraints. It permits the publication of full-color images, video segments, and audio clips. Links to other sites can be embedded in the text. The Etruscans left behind a wealth of artifacts and epigraphic documents, images of which can be presented effectively in an electronic format. The electronic medium also permits more timely publication of research and reviews. By publishing electronically the amount of time elapsing between the submission of an article and its appearance in a print can be halved thus permitting more efficient transmission of scholarly ideas. Finally, given the rising cost of print productions and decreases in funding for library resources, an electronic publication ensures that the international community of scholars has free and unlimited access to the latest research in the field.

EAMENA: Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa
    EAMENA
EAMENA’s Project Directors have been at the forefront of aerial archaeology in the Middle East for over two decades, undertaking annual aerial reconnaissance expeditions in conjunction with the Royal Jordanian Air Force to collect up-to-date images of the landscape and archaeological sites of Jordan. These images are then digitised and stored in the online ‘Aerial Photographic Archive for Archaeology in the Middle East’, along with digitised historic collections of aerial photographs from across the region. The archive (available online at: www.apaame.org) has provided an invaluable tool for researchers to analyse and compare sites in the region over time but critically this work has also highlighted the accelerated risk to sites, in particular from agricultural and urban expansion.
EAMENA’s project directors recognised that a radical step change was required to move from analysing and interpreting sites to responding directly to these threats and so EAMENA was established in January 2015. The majority of the team are based in the School of Archaeology at Oxford with two other members based at the Archaeology Department, University of Leicester. This project is the first to analyse aerial data from across the whole MENA region and also to focus on the levels and types of threats to sites, including looting.
EAMENA’s primary aim is to rapidly record and evaluate the status of the archaeological landscape of the MENA region in order to create an accessible body of data which can be used by national and international heritage professionals to target those sites most in danger and better plan and implement the preservation and protection of this heritage.

    Two Electronic Cuneiform Tools
    From Martin Worthington [mailto:mjw65@cam.ac.uk]
    ========================================

    Title: two electronic cuneiform tools

Through the good offices of Dr Tom Gillam, formerly of the University of Cambridge, two electronic cuneiform tools are available at

    https://cuneifyplus-puffin.rhcloud.com

    1) A “cuneify” tool, which converts transliteration to cuneiform (it takes a few seconds for the cuneiform to appear, so please be patient).

Line breaks are maintained as entered, and one can choose from several versions of the script.  It is not necessary to install the fonts in order to use the site, but it will be necessary if one copies-and-pastes the output (e.g. into a Word file).

    2) A tool for generating sign lists: one inputs a transliteration, and the site creates a sign list, consisting in the relevant cuneiform sign followed by its readings which are used in the inputted transliteration.

Upper- and lowercase remain as in the transliteration, which is a convenient way of separating Akkadian and Sumerian readings.

Both tools are much indebted to Steve Tinney’s “cuneify" (http://oracc.museum.upenn.edu/saao/knpp/cuneiformrevealed/cuneify/).

I am sure Dr Gillam, who has done this service to Mesopotamian studies (not his own field) on a voluntary basis, would be glad to hear from anyone who finds it useful: <mailto:tpgillam@googlemail.com>.  Any technical queries should be addressed to me in the first instance.

Dreams of Antiquity: Bibliographische Online-Datenbank zu Träumen und Visionen in der Antike
    Lieber Benutzer,

    Fictional Rome
At this site, you will be able to:
    1. search a data base of over 1500 titles of novels available in English that are set in ancient Rome, the city itself or the Roman world, from the time of the monarchy to the empire. The search form will allow you to specify author, title, publication date, topic and period, individually or in combination. In addition, you can search for specific historical characters or for all titles that are mysteries.
    2. find further information on any title by clicking the title. The information will include all normal bibliographical data plus much that is specific to this database, such as cross-references to published reviews or listings in standard reference works. You can find short evaluations in that screen.
    3. read reviews of several titles. You will find on the Authors page a blue dot preceding several novelists' names. This indicates that a review can be found on that specific page.
    4. read essays on the historical novel in general and suggestions on how to use them in classes, high school through college.
    5. participate in the ongoing development of the site by providing added information: titles that have been omitted or more information about titles that are not completely annotated. Even if a title has a review, you may add a review/evaluation of your own. This is most easily done by using the e-mail option.
    6. talk with others interested in the topic by posting comments to the bulletin board. If a need develops for different bulletin boards for sub-topics, they will be created.
    7. see listings for other sites that deal with ancient Rome or historical novels.
    8. research historical figures. Find out what their lives were really like by searching other sites and reading about them in novels.
    9. use the timeline to further aid in your reading experience and understanding of it.
